Applicants can help speed up claims By PETER CURTICE SocM Security Mw—m Disability claims usually take longer to process than other So da! Security claims. But people who are applying for Social Secu rity and Supplemental Security Income (SSQ disability benefits can help speed up the process. We urge applicants to bring In any medical reports they may already have in their possession. Normally, a considerable amount of information concern ing a person’s medical condi tion Is needed in order for a proper Social Security decision to be made. Quite often, a lot of time Is spent contacting physicians, hospitals, clinics, and other treating sources for this docu mentation. Valuable time can be saved If the applicant Is able to bring in any medical reports he or she already has. It can really make a difference in how soon a decision is made. And more importantly, it can make a difference in how quickly Social Security benefits will start if the person’s claim is approved. In addition to actual medi cal records, school records are very helpful in making deci sions for children applying for SSI. Any correspondence that parent has received from the school which indicates the child’s level of performance or behavioral problems is ex tremely helpful. Such records can be report cards; individual education Elans; and progress notes or :tter from teachers, guidance counselors, and school psychol ogists. Recent statistics show that, in numerous cases, the medical records that were presented at the time of application were the only ones needed to make the proper disability decision. In these Instances, not only did the claimant receive notice of the decision much quicker, but taxpayer money was saved Correction Donald Manley was identi fied as Macey Mallory In a pho tograph of band fruit sales award winners in the Feb. 18 edition of The Perquimans Weekly due to misinformation provided to the newspaper. Manley was one of three high school band students recog nized for top sales. The newspa per regrets the error. Processing times on claims are short when people bring In supporting records. But, we want to caution people not to delay fil ing if they do not have the re cords.
