Center salutes food service By BETH FINNEY V", V Brtw Cew»f ActMBe» Director Like other departments In a nursing center, the food service staff works every day of the year. To honor thd hard work of the food service staff, Brian Center Nursing Care, Hertford will recognize National Food Service Employees Day on Wednesday, Sept 22. A variety of activities has been planned and each food service employee Will receive a certif icate of appreciation at a luncheon/reception held at the center. ' Work often begins as early as 5:30 a.m. to have break fast ready by 7:30 a.m. For the rest Of the day the kitchen Is bustling with activity to get one meal served and cleaned up while preparing for the next one. Frequently, while meal preparation is taking place, the staff is also preparing for a special occasion -for example, a monthly birthday party, a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day reception, or a Halloween party. These occasions are some of the special extras the residents and staff enjoy that add so much to their lives. Debbie Spence, food service director, says of her staff, "We believe food should be pleasing to the eye as well as to the palate. In addition to hot foods being hot and cold foods cold when meals are served, the staff prepares attractive trays. Paying attention to these details Is one more way we can let residents know that we think they are special.” The dietary staff works to prepare nutritional meals that balance proper nourishment requirements, as well take into regional and personal food preferences. The dietary department also supplements meals with dally snacks. A special thanks to the following dietary staff, Dorothy Hall. Shirley A. Smith. Iris Lee . Barbara Johnson, Mary Skinner, Louise Privott, Carrie Brinkley, Rosalyn Coston, Sharlene Brothers, and Debbie Spence. Bom all white, unless they nave some black markings around the eyes or body, as they mature they slowly darken into the mottled blue grey from which their names derive. Trying to pick out a puppy is a game of chance as : ' one can only guess at the dog’s ; final physical appearance. 1 went this weekend to pick Bookmarks Shelley Fearn County Librarian out a puppy from a local breeder for a mend of mine in MacLean, Virginia. I was looking for a lighter shade of blue, a signifi cantly mottled coat, and most importantly, a widey-head. The wlaey-head gives the dog a more Impressive look and helps the dog retain its “don't mess with me” appearance. The puppy we chose (it took two great minds, one of which was not mine, to come to a deci sion) I think will be perfect He was very mottled, and had a very wide forehead marked with a pure white blaze. lighter in color than his litter mates, his tail will probably keep its white fur. Es pecially important to me, is that he is a big puppy. I wanted a big heeler for my friend who runs alone at paries in the D.C. area. Judging from the size of the sire this puppy should be much big ger than my dog. Sunday, together with an other friend who is as impulsive as I, we delivered the dear little puppy to its new owner in Mac Lean. The new owner was thrilled with the puppy. I haven’t seen her that pleased since got her maiden name back. I don't know. Never a dog lover, I have become smitten With the Blue Heelers. They don’t bark much, are fiercely protective, are very smart, and are extremely low maintenance. Their looks are so strange that their mere pres ence gives pause to anyone who comes near. The perfect dog for the single female. Or maybe I’m single because my dog is so fierce. 1*11 have to think about that. ...I just did and I’ll keep my dog. He’s easier and more agree able than most men. One of these days I’m going to say “no.” So far I haven't been too successful. Maybe I should practice in the mirror.. Or, how about using role playing. Maybe I can do “Skinner” and give myself a reward every time I use the word. If worse comes to worse. I can train myself in the Pavlovlan tradition to say no at the ringing of a phone. I don’t have a problem with telling stories, or singing, or in general standing up in front of a crowd. Pearl Mesta was held up as a role model for me as a child. • However, people are starting to expect more from me than I can “ possibly deliver. 1 This Friday, 1 am doing a story time at the courthouse for Indian Summer Festival. I agreed to do so because of many good . reasons, one of which was that I didn’t know how to say “no”. What is so peculiar is that I thor oughly enjoy doing those types of ' things as long as no one expects v great things from me. Now. a week before I do this “gig,” panic has set in. I can’t de ' . clde on stories, songs, and seem unable to memorize anything. As I explained to a fold singer in ' Norfolk. "I’m a librarian who can Sing a mediocre fashion, and tell stories in a mediocre fashion. Tm the proverbial jack of all trades and master of none.” As long as it doesn’t bother you. it won’t ,:-f bother me.
