9/10 All-Stars capture 4th Go 2-2 in in Tarheel League tourney The Perquimans Youth League 9-and-lO-year-old All- Stars performed well in their first Tarheel League Tournament last week in RobersonvUle. Tallying a 2-2 record in the double elimination tourna ment, the team placed fourth in a field of 10 teams. Weston Curies sat eight RobersonvUle players on Ks in the first game on July 17 on the way to an 8-0 victory. Perquimans took advantage of walks and errors to claim the win. A sluggish Perquimans squad fell to Bear Grass on July 20, coUecting only one hit on the way to a 10-0 loss. Matt White was relieved by A.J. Overman and Josh Lassiter. On July 22, Perquimans found some offense to take Jamesville 11-1 in four innings. Lassiter got the win. Drew Winslow had a double and a single. Curies tallied two hits. White, Lassiter, Garry Byrum, and Greg Bail each had hits. Oak City/Hamilton used some Perquimans miscues to take a 6-5 come-from-behind win on July 23. Ahead 5-3 in the top of the sixth, the local squad couldn’t muster the defense to claim a victory and keep their championship hopes alive. Curies struck out six in the loss. Winslow smacked a double and a single. Will WiUiams collected a dou ble. White got two hits. Craig Matthews, Curies and Lassiter had singles. “It was a very good experi ence for our boys,” said Perquimans head coach Edgar Roberson. “We were competi tive and as talented as any team there. It shows that our decision to have a 9-and 10- year-old league was the right one and that our coaches are doing a good job.” Roberson said one of the highlights of the tournament was that a tournament official commented on the team’s good sportsmanship.
