It’s not Broadway. It’s not
even off-Broadway. But Lucy
Vaughan’s USO Camp Show
will be appreciated by those
who choose to drive off Snug
Ifprbor Road to Dinner
Theater at Angler’s Cove.
Especially if they lived
through the days of World War
II.
i Unlike some shows written
^bout the war, this one is
authentic. Vaughan spent a
year on the USO circuit. The
musical is taken from her
experiences.working with the
likes of Bob Hope, Ingrid
Bergman and Red Skelton. It
features 40 songs, including
some by Glenn Miller, the
Andrews Sisters and Johnny
Mercer.
’ She remembers fondly her
hays with the USO.
“We never knew where we
Jwere going to play,” she said,
fit was a secret until we got
there.” She performed mostly
in hospitals in France,
Germany, Belgium, Holland
and Luxembourg.
“It was a good way to earn a
living,” she said. “The pay was
wonderful.” But it was also
tough seeing so many people
die.
“When it was bad, it was so
sad it was a heartbreaker,” she
said. “It just tore me to pieces.

The cast of USO Camp Show, an original musi
cal written and directed by former USO per
former Lucy Vaughan, prepares for opening
night. The show features great talent and a lit-
was being killed or wounded.”
Those memories were
brought to the surface recently
when Vaughan attended her
high school class reunion.
Vaughan, also a Broadway
veteran, takes the stage herself
to do two French numbers,
“Lili Marlene” and Place
Pigalle,” in the show. Her
years in show business are
obvious as she holds an audi
ence spellbound.
Vaughan has brought
together quite a mix of per
formers for the show, most
with experience in theater in
the Albemarle area. Glee
Hammer, Phil McMullan, Rick
Durren, Cricket Fox, Theresa
Molthen, Anne and Erin
Parrish, Gene Webster, John
Becker, Chris Boyette, Skip
Jones, Ed Morrow, Athena
Morris, Russ Rumps and Amy
Weber make up the cast. Roy
Darnell handles the music on
the keyboard.
The show is produced by
Julie Feeney and directed by
Vaughan.
USO Camp Show is very
emotional. At the end of Act I,
the entire cast sings “When
the local stage more often.
The two-hour production
takes the theater-goer from
laughter to tears and back
again.
Whether you were in WWII,
lived during those years or
have just heard about the
experiences of others during
that time, the USO Camp Show
is worth taking the time to see.
The show opened Friday
and wUl be performed on Sept.
1, 2, 8 and 9 at Angler’s Cove.
Dinner will be served at 6:30
p.m. with an 8 o’clock curtain.
Tickets are $17.50. For reserva
tions or information, call 426-

at night.

the Lights Go On All Over the
World,” with each performer
holding a single flashlight. It is
a spellbinding moment, even
for those of us who have only
studied about World War II in
history books. For those who
remember the era, it is espe
cially poignant.
One of the most notable per
formances is presented by
Chris Boyette, daughter of
Henry and Geri Carney of
Angler’s Cove. Boyette por
trays a Flemish girl, and her
two solos are powerful. She
