Brinson Edith Mae Dozier Brinson, 81, of 146 Riverview Park, Hertford, died Saturday evening, Nov. 4, 1995, in Albemarle Hospital. A native of Currituck County she was the daughter of the late Earlie and Pearl Mae Hartley Dozier and the widow of Howard Lofton Brinson. She was retired from Swift & Company and was a member of Snug Harbor Community Church. Survivors include a daugh ter, Louise B. Ferrin of Camden; two sons, Howard L. Brinson Jr. of Hertford and Shelton L. Brinson of Chesapeake, Va.; 15 grandchil dren and 23 great-grandchil dren. Graveside services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Powell’s ' Point Christian Church Cemetery, Harbinger, with Rev. Stanley Nixon offici ating. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrange ments. Cornelia S. Phillips Cornelia Smith Phillips, 84, of 801 S. Church Street, Hertford, died Thursday morn ing, November 2, 1995, in Albemarle Hospital. A native of Perquimans County she was the daughter of the late Warren and Annie Copeland Smith and the widow of Zack Webb Phillips. She and her husband owned and operated the former Phillips & Sons Grocery. She was a member of Hertford Baptist Church and its Hannah Holmes Sunday School Class. Survivors include two sons. Gene Phillips and Jack Phillips, both of Hertford; two sisters, Eunice Lane of Jamestown, N.C. and Lessie Ownley of Elizabeth City; a brother, Johnnie Smith of Hertford; four grandchildren, Cheryl Phillips and David Phillips, both of Hertford, Donna Phillips of Greenville and Rev. Wallace Phillips of Ahoskie; and 5 great-grand children. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Swindell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Vaughan officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Wood Cemetery. Swindell’s plans annual service of remembrance On Saturday, Dec. 2, Swindell Funeral Home of Hertford will host its seventh annual Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m. in the Hertford United Methodist Church. This will prove to be an up-lifting service of remem brance, strength and sharing for those who lost loved ones during the past year and oth ers who have also sustained losses. Through the scriptures, music and prayer, this service will celebrate the lives of those Scouts to collect food for needy Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Perquimans County will be participating in the upcoming National Scouting for Food Drive. On Nov. 11 the scouts will fan out across the county delivering printed food bags to each household in the county. They will return on the follow ing Saturday, Nov. 18 to collect the bags that they hope will be filled with food items. Food donations will be returned to the Open Door Food Pantry located in Winfall. The Open Door Food Pantry distributes food to Perquimans County residents in need. The plastic bags the scouts will be distributing were fur nished by the Boy Scout Tidewater Council. The grant, under the Rural Health Care Transition Grants Program, is administered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. There are about 3,500 people in the hospital’s service area who have been diagnosed as diabetic, and another estimat ed 3,500 who have it, but don’t know it. Diabetes and its com plications cause over 70 deaths each year in Chowan Hospital’s service area, more than twice the national aver age. Untreated diabetes causes blindness, heart disease, kid ney failure and amputation of limbs. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is the fourth leading cause of deaths in the United States, and is especially prevalent among black Americans and people of Hispanic origin. For each person who has been diagnosed as diabetic, there is one who has the disease but doesn’t know it. The diabetes clinics will provide patients education and monitoring to include use of insulin, risk factors of con trolled diabetes, symptoms and treatment of hypo/hyper glycemia, medications, glucose monitoring, sick day manage ment, travel tips, foot care and how to exercise. The clinic will seek to coor dinate care with all health care providers in the various communities, including Social Service Departments, Health Departments, Rural Health Clinics, Home Health Agencies, Home Care Services and private physicians.
