Page 6 The Perquimans Weekly Sports July 30, 1998 Albemarle girls claim state Babe Ruth championship First-year league could win its way to World Series They traditionally sit in opposing dug-outs, but when they gathered on the same bencli, the outcome was a state championship. Players from Camden, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties were on the roster of the first l6-to-l8 Years Old Albemarle District 1 Babe Ruth Fast-Pitch Softball All-Star Team. Together, the team members won the state tournament with a 4-1 record, fighting both talented oppo nents and blistering heat over four days. The championship came to the Albemarle on July 19 when the district team topped Pitt County, 2-0, in a pitchers’ dual. Dare’s Katy Jo Haywood threw the win. Perquimans’ Kim Stallings and Gates County’s Angie Bennett banged out key hits. The tournament started with Albemarle's 10-4 win over Southern Wayne with Pasquotank's Holly Temple on the mound. Leading the game’s hit parade were Bennett, Stallings, Rachel White (Pasquotank), Mindy Meiggs (Camden), and Mindy Roberson (Perquimans). Game 2 brought Haywood’s first tourney victory, an 8-3 win over Pitt. White, Haywood, April Owens (Perquimans), Sarah Alexander (Dare) and Martha Lake (Dare) led the offense. Albemarle blanked Wilson County 4-0 on the arm of Dare’s Mary Lee in game 3. Camden’s Laura Forehand was tough in relief. Leading hitters were Lake, Meiggs, Roberson, Temple and Casey Riddick (Gates). The only undefeated team left in the double elimination tournament by championship day, the Albemarle fell 6-3 to Pitt in Sunday’s opener. White, Forehand, Lake and Kathy Gullett (Dare) had hits. The loss set up the champi onship game, and District 1 pulled off the win. Team coaches were Doug Temple. Robin Forehand, Ross Thornton and Edgar Roberson.
