Writing is hard work
Writing is hard work. I
think we sometimes take good
writing for granted, but every
once in a while a book comes
along that reminds me that the
art of creating memorable
characters take a great deal of
effort, as well as creativity and
skill.
The novels that recently
caused me to consider the
characteristics of good writing
are two by Rebecca Wells,
Little Altars Everywhere and
The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya
Sisterhood. Both are currently
on the bestseller list and both
wUl soon be in our collection.
Wells, an actress, play
wright, and novelist, has
drawn some very memorable
characters. They have individ
ual voices. The settings -
Louisiana for the most part -
serve as background for explo
rations of family relation
ships.
The young people who par
ticipated in our summer
Writing Is Delicious! work- ’
shop probably agree with me
that good writing is hard
work. But the results can be
most rewarding. Workshop
leader Dana Hay is busy
putting the finishing touches
on the commemorative vol
ume produced during the
workshop. I’m looking forward
to having copies available here
in the library.
The Happy Bookers, the
book discussion group that
meets the last Monday of each
month, are also interested in
good writing. September’s
novel for discussion is The
Snapshots

Recycle drink bottles
Did you know that #1 PET
plastic soft drink bottles are
made out of oil and natural
gas? These are the same raw
materials used in the produc
tion of polyester fiber and
many other plastic products.
In fact, in 1996,48.4 billion PET
bottles collected in the United
States were substituted for
these raw materials in manu
facturing.
Recycled PET bottles,
including those collected in
our local programs, go
through some interesting
processes to become a variety
of products. The bottles are
collected, ground into chips
called “flake” and cleaned.
These are three possible
routes the flake may follow.
1. PET Flake can be melted
and molded into new PET con
tainers such as tennis ball con
tainers, detergent bottles, car
parts, pallet strapping, scour
ing pads, and cassette tape

cases.
2. PET flake can be melted
and spun into polyester fiber
that may be used in carpets, T-
shirts, sweaters, tennis shoes,
caps, upholstery, and fiberfill
for sleeping bags.
3. PET flake can be chemi
cally purified and re-manufac
tured into new soft drink,
juice, and water bottles, as
well as other food containers.
The correct way to recycle
PET bottles is to simply
remove the lids, rinse, and flat
ten. You may get information
from the National Soft Drink
Association: www.nsda.org.

Association For Plastic
Container Recovery:
