Page 6 The Perquimans Weekly Sports September 3, 1998 Lady Pirates open season with win Perquimans takes Plymouth with 3 straight The Lady Pirates put Plymouth away in the volley ball season opener last Tuesday, taking three straight with scores of 15-7, 15-13,15-11. “The girls started off well, executed like they should,” said Lady Pirates head coach Carolyn Rogers. The Lady Vikings, howev er, had no intention of mak ing the match easy for Perquimans, battling hard the last two games of the match to force some tense moments. “Plymouth improved with every game,” Rogers said. “My girls had to fight to pull off that second game. In the third game, they kept their composure to take the win.” Kim Stallings was hot behind the back line, serving for 11 points. The senior also tallied six blocks and two kiUs. Rogers said Stallings fell during the match, injuring a problem knee. The coach said she told the All-Conference player to take it easy on the court to avoid further injury. Stallings was better at prac tice Monday, Rogers said. Brooke Mickelson also had a good service day, scoring nine. Rogers said the senior provided good sets for the front line. April Owens and Ashley Copeland served for seven each. Copeland also had seven kills and four blocks. Owens had two kills. Mindy Roberson added four points, six kills and six blocks. Natalie Layden scored two. Rogers said Ashley Winslow also provided good sets, although the sophomore is nursing a sore wrist which may keep her from behind the service line on a regular basis. Overall, Rogers said she is pleased with the way her team plays and the way they interact. “This is one of the most team-oriented groups I’ve ever had,” Rogers said. “They get along, they help each other out.” Another plus for the Lady Pirates is that the roster includes several players able to play a variety of positions, according to the coach. The younger players are learning the system Rogers uses well, she said, and her reserves are very capable. “They’re doing great,” Rogers said of the overall performance of the team. “I think it’s going to be a good year for them.” Now, the problem is actu ally getting in some games. Last Thursday’s contest against Manteo was can celled by Hurricane Bonnie, and Columbia experienced a power outage that cancelled Monday’s scheduled game. Rogers hopes that this week’s matches will get the schedule back on track. The Lady Pirates were set to go to Currituck Tuesday, and will host Columbia on Thursday. Next week, Perquimans will host Edenton on Tuesday and Northside on Thursday. Perquimans falls to Camden Senior running back Aaron Burke posted the Pirates’ points, in the third quarter on a seven-yard run, then kicked the PAT in a 20-7 loss to Camden in Hertford Saturday night. Camden got jump-started early, hitting paydirt less than 2 minutes into the game. The Bruins added a second touch down in the second period to take a 14-0 lead at the half. Perquimans came out look ing stronger in the third stan za, setting up a drive that led to Bimke’s scoring run. It was the Perquimans pass ing game that opened up the way for Burke’s TD run. Quarterback Eric Byrum hit Clifton Jenkins with a couple of short passes over the middle to spread the Bruin defense. In the fourth quarter, a short punt gave Camden good field position, and the Bruins took advantage of the opportu nity to score a third touch down. The Pirates were able to hold off the points-after attempt. Seemingly back on track, the Pirates were impressive, marching downfield for what looked like a second score. But a Camden interception in the endzone put an end to the Pirates’ come-back hopes. Perquimans managed to tally most of its offense in the air, with Byrum passing for 75 yards on a 9-for-12 night. Jenkins gained 47 and Derrick Leary, 21. Burke was the lead man on the ground, gaining 43 yards. Burke also had three kick-off returns for 61 yards. Fullback James White added 13 up the middle. Defensively, Jerriel Perry, Lamonte Pettaway, Andrew Harris and Ryan Woodell led the team in tackles. “We came out kind of dead and they executed very weU in the first half,” first-year' head coach Jim Stewart told The Daily Advance Saturday night. “We couldn’t really get our ground game going. Our ground game got stymied. They were really keying on that.” Indeed, the Pirates had trou ble moving the ball, gaining only 38 yards rushing on the night. Camden’s swarming defense allowed Perquimans only 18 yards total offense in the first half. The post-hurricane heat also caused its share of prob lems, with players from both teams taking regular breaks, and each team losing a player before the game was over to the blanketing humidity. Perquimans hosts Edenton Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the team’s third pre-conference contest.
