Big Sweep comes to Perquimans
If you’ve ever walked along
North Carolina’s beaches,
lakes, rivers, and streams and
stubbed your toe - or even got
ten cut - because someone
carelessly tossed their trash
out, you’re not alone. If you
are bothered by litter left by
careless people, you can help
ease the pain by participating
in the statewide waterway lit
ter cleanup.
Wildlife suffers from litter,
too. Turtles can die from
ingesting plastic bags. Birds
can get tangled in fishing line.
You can be part of the solu
tion to litter by joining the
First Citizens Bank Big Sweep
cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 19
in Perquimans County, from 9
a.m.-l p.m. (during the Indian
Summer Festival) or anytime
the following week.
Since 1987, when Big Sweep
began, over 3 million pounds
of debris along North
Carolina’s waterways have
been collected. In 1997 alone.
Big Sweep volunteers collected
over 255 tons of trash. The
most common category was
plastic, followed by metal,
glass, paper, wood, rubber,
and cloth. Unusual finds last
year included bikes, lawn fur
niture, a toupee, a microwave,
television, a baby carriage, a
houseboat, auto batteries, an
orange fingernail, a pay
phone, a toilet, medical waste,
a traffic cone, and various
dead animals - almost every
thing, including a kitchen
sink!
To volunteer or for more
information contact Marjorie
Rayburn, Perquimans Big
Sweep Coordinator at 426-5097
or 482-8431, daytime.
Individuals, families, school
groups, churches, clubs, and
organizations are encouraged
to participate. Gloves, Big
Sweep trash bags, pens, and
data sheets will be provided.
