Mendez said even though five Perquimans runners placed in the top 10, Northside took first overall by nine points. Mendez said Northside is much stronger this season. “To show you the strength of Perquimans and Northside, the first athlete from any other team was 15th,” Mendez said. Northside scored 23; Perquimans, 32; Bear Grass, 112; and Pamlico, 120. T.J. Long came in fifth; Ben Godfrey, seventh; and Stan Saunders, eighth. “1 feel very good about both teams this year,” Mendez said. This week, Perquimans was scheduled to travel to Northeastern on Tuesday and will go back to Northside on Thursday. Here is a list of the 1998-99 hunting seasons as compiled by the N.C. Megal Stallings added nine; Gena Harrell, eight; and Danielle Stallings and Shelley Alexander, five each. The team will travel to Currituck on Wednesday for its second conference match. Boating Skills and Seamanship and Piloting will be offered this fall by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The courses are tuition-free. Anyone with nautical inter ests, including armchair sailors, will enjoy studying navigation and charting tech niques in the Piloting course, and the tricks of boat handling and more, in the Boating Skills and Seamanship course. The Piloting course, designed to introduce students to navigating the waters of the Albemarle Sound and its rivers, will be held at the Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton on Oct. 23 from 6:30-10 p.m., and on Oct. 24 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The 5-week Boating Skills and Seamanship, Part 1 course will begin Nov. 19 at the College of The Albemarle, Chowan County Center. The 2 1/2 hour class gets under way at 7 p.m. each Thursday, except Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. (Part 2 will start Jan. 7,1999.) Taught by trained and expe rienced Auxiliary instructors, the courses will cover topics such as: buying and equipping a boat, boat handling and trai- lering, navigating the waters, aids to navigation, “rules of the road,” and more. The courses are tuition-free; cost of the Boating Skills and Seamanship textbook, materi als and administrative fee is $25. Couples sharing a text pay a total of only $30. The only cost to the student for the Piloting course is $10 for mate rials.
