Perquimans

East Regional
title Tuesday

The Lady Pirates were char
itable Tuesday night.
The peaking Perquimans
posse allowed homestanding
Bladenboro to win game two of
the best of five series before
pounding them in the final two /
sets. With the win, the Lady
Pirates picked up the East
Regional title and the right to
play the winner of the West
Regional Saturday at high
noon at N.C. State University
for the state championship tro
phy
“They aU stepped up their
game and they pulled it back
and practically dominated
those last two games,” a happy
head coach Carolyn Rogers
said from the road just after
the win.
Mindy Roberson, the team’s
lone senior who has been its
backbone, served points 2-11 in
game one on the way to a 15-10
win.
Down 9-1 in game two,
Perquimans fought back, but
could not overcome the large
deficit. Bladenboro tied the
match with a 15-10 win.
Then the real Lady Pirates
suited up, according to Rogers,
taking over the visitors’ court.
Roberson served five straight,
including two aces, in game
three and Ashley Rountree
served the last seven of game
four. Perquimans won both 15-
5 to seal the win.
“In the third game they all
played well,” Rogers said. “I
didn’t think we played as well
as we played last week (see
page 6 for details), but we did
well considering where we
were. I understand they
(Bladenboro) start five
seniors, and their crowd was
cheering so loud the girls
couldn’t hear each other on
the floor. It was a small gym
and hard to play in. But we
came back and we were
impressive.”
The match capped off a
four-game blitz through the
state playoffs. The team has
outscored opponents an
incredible 190-64, sweeping the
first three contests in straight
sets before dropping the one
game to Bladenboro Tuesday.
More impressive than then-
outstanding play to some who
watched Tuesday’s game was
the team’s demeanor. Rogers
said she was complimented on
the Lady Pirates’ court pres
ence and behavior.
“They acted like a class act
team,” Rogers said.
It just goes to show that
sometimes, the good guys do
win.

Morris, however, used a 165-85
advantage in East Hertford to
win comfortably.
The election still leaves a
seat on the Hertford board
open as Eley will resign from
his seat two years early to be
sworn in as mayor in
December. He will replaced vet
eran local politician John
Beers, who opted not to seek
another term after almost 30
years as a councilman and
mayor. The other seat was
vacated by Billy L. Winslow,
also a long-time councilman.
About 29 percent of
Hertford’s 1,480 registered vot
ers went to the polls, based on
the numbers of votes cast for
mayor, a total of 428. Elections
supervisor Eula Forbes said
the poll books will be verified
during the canvass Friday for
actual number of voters.
All vote totals are unofficial
until the canvass by the Board
of Elections.

Winfall voters turned out in
droves for an election that did
n’t get much notice until the
past two weeks.
Over 180 of Winfall’s 343
registered voters showed up at
the Parksville Ruritan build
ing to cast a ballot Tuesday.
Morris Mitchell’s write-in
campaign brought him within
two votes of registered candi
date Ken Rominger for seats on
WinfaU’s town council.
Rominger collected 86 votes,
while Mitchell was written in
84 times. Write-in candidate
Henry Ormond got 69 votes,
while Carol Cooper received
47.
Incumbent mayor Fred
Yates, who ran unopposed col
lected 131 votes. Cooper
received 22 write-ins.
The vote totals stayed close
between Rominger, Mitchell
and Ormond, and the unoffi
cial results were only declared
after the elections board
approved and tallied provi
sional ballots. In the ballot
boxes, Mitchel received 79
votes; Rominger, 75; and
Ormond, 63. Both Ormond and
Mitchell got three absentee
votes, while Rominger got one.
Rominger received 10 votes
from provisional ballots,
Mitchell, two. Fourteen provi
sional ballots were cast at the
polls, with the board approv
ing 13 of them for the election.
The board ruled that one voter
did not live inside the Winfall
city limits.
All vote totals are unofficial
until the canvass by the board
of elections Friday.
The election still leaves the
seat once occupied by the late
Rev. WiUie Moore vacant.
