The Perquimans Weekly, November 11, 1999 3 Obituaries Curtis W. Chappell Curtis William ChappeU, 77, of Route 6, Box 137A, Hertford, : died Thursday, November 4, ::1999 at his residence. He was a • native of Princess Ann County, VA., the son of the late William Joseph and Lottie Ewell Chappell, and the husband of -Ethel Mae Riggs Chappell. Mr. : -Chappell was a veteran, having -served in World War II with the ■TUS Navy during the Normandy ■'Invasion. He was a Methodist. Besides his wife, Mr. .iChappell is served by four daughters, Linda Sawyer and fJaenette Pallett of Hertford; Shirley Wood of Virginia 'Beach, VA., and Sandy Leonhardt of Knotts Island; Ttwo sons, Curtis William TChappell Jr. of Virginia Beach, TyA., and Jimmy Wayne T Chappell of South Mills; 13 1 grandchildren and 11 great- 1 grandchildren. Frank Doucette DURHAM - Frank Doucette, 93 of 4830 Old Chapel Hill Road, died Tuesday morning, November 2,1999, in his home. A native of Tusket, Novia Scotia, he was the son of the late Frank and Agnes Hubbard Doucette. Survivors include his wife, Mary Leonard Broadwell Doucette; a son. Rev. Leonard Frank Doucette of Hertford; three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Moore of Durham, Margaret D’Eon of Saugus, MA. and Agnes Maselhas of Vero Beach, FL.; 10 grandchil dren and 10 great-grandchil dren. Funeral services were held Nov. 4 in the Chapel of Hall- Wynne Funeral Home. Burial followed in Maplewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Organ Fund at Hertford United Methodist Church, 200 Dobbs Street, Hertford, NC 27944. Information was provided as a courtesy of Swindell Funeral Home. David H. Green, USN (ret) Captain David Hepburn Green USN (ret), of Route 1, Box 840, Hertford, died Sunday morning, November 7,1999, in Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. He was born August 19, 1920 in Washington DC while his father was stationed at the Naval Proving Grounds in Dahlgren, VA. Growing up involved mov ing to places where his father served. He was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same district in Wisconsin from whence his dad. Captain B.H. Green USNA ‘05 had been appointed. Graduating into World War II, he went almost immediately into the Submarine Service in the good ship Albacore (SS218). Next was back to new con struction and three more war patrols in PARCHE (SS384). As the war ended, tours followed in Skipjack, Cusk, Catfish and finally shore duty at Fleet Sonar School, San Diego, in the Pro-Sub Section. Back to sea in Diodon (SS349) and a warpatrol in Korean waters. A tour on ComSub Pac Staff and then CO Requin (SS481). Three years in the Pentagon followed by a split-tour on a CarDiv. Staff and CO Charles P. Cecil (DD835). War College in Newport - one year as a student and two as faculty. CO Waccamaw (A0109) and first E. Wartime retirement meant a year at Com 3 which ended March 1965. Civilian life came easy with 8 years at Columbia University in their building program and a year as business manager in a public school system. Then back to sea as master of an AEC research vessel out of UPR in Mayaguez, PR. Three years found him back in the college building business until final retirement and farming in 1981. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Rutter Green; three daughters, Nancy Meshnick of Montague, NJ, Sharman Bartram of Sharon, CT. and Holly Gowdy of Walpole, NH; a son, David H. Green Jr. of Walpole, MA.; two sisters, Natalie Canby of Leeds, MA. and Barbara Bowen of Southbury, CT; and 7 grandchildren. A Memorial Mass wiU be cel ebrated Thursday morning at 9:00 am in St. Anne’s Catholic Church with Fr. Roch T. Drozdzik at Celebrant. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Sharon, CT. SwindeU Funeral Home of Hertford is in charge of arrangements. Clyde E. Harris Clyde Edison “Speck” Harris, 83, of US. 17 Bypass, Hertford, died Wednesday, Nov. 3,1999 in his home. A native of Chowan County, he was the husband of Hazel Van Sant Harris and the son of the late Zach A. and Mary Brinkley Harris. He was the owner of Harris Plumbing and Building Supply Co. and a past director and past president of the Board of Directors of the Hertford Savings and Loan. He was a past president of the Hertford Rotary Club and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. He served in the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion in the US. Army during World War II and was a recipient of the bronze star. Besides his wife, survivors include one daughter, Pattie H. Whitehurst of Hertford; one son, David Walter Brewin of Cullowhee; two sisters, Eva H. Ward and Mary Ann H. Tepper both of Hertford; two brothers, Jesse Lee Harris of Hertford and Zack Harris of Goldsboro; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held on Saturday, November 6, 1999 at 1 p.m. in Cedar Wood Cemetery with Rev. Gene Boyce officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Perquimans County Volunteer Rescue Squad at P.O. Box 191, Hertford, or Perquimans County Public Library, 110 W. Academy St., Hertford. Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford, was in charge of arrangements. Mattie R. Stokely Mattie Russell Stokely, 76, of Rt. 4, Hertford, died Saturday morning, November 6, 1999 in Albemarle Hospital. A life-long resident of Perquimans, she was the daughter of the late William Earl and Nenar Umphlett RusseU. She was a member of the Berea Church of Christ. Mrs. Stokely was the wife of James R. Stokely Sr. and the mother of three daughters, Kay Douglas of Virginia Beach, VA., Ruth Ann Casey of Suffolk, VA. and Sandra Nixon of Stafford, VA.; and one son James R. “Jimmy” Stokely of Hertford. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Edgar RusseU. Funeral services were held Nov. 8 in the Berea Church of Christ with Dr. LyndeU Stike officiating. Around our cornucopia is a display of books purchased with the 1999 Project Tomorrow grant funds we were awarded by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, for which we are very thankful. In the display case we have “Books Add Color to Your Life” to encourage young people to read. In the children’s room a table arrangement is devoted to “Books About the Underground Railroad.” On top of the large print shelving are our newest large print additions, including Stuart Woods’ Orchid Beach, Nancy Thayer’s Between Husbands & Friends, and the bestselling Yesterday I Cried by lyanla Vanzant. Programs scheduled for November have included a patriotic-themed presentation sponsored by the Friends of the Library on Nov. 9 and “Let’s Talk Diabetes” with Gwen Rogerson on Nov. 10. The library will be closed for Veterans Day on Nov. 11. In recognition of National Children’s Book Week we’re having two birthday parties. At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, Amber Brown’s birthday party will begin in the chil dren’s room. Henry Reed’s birthday party will be held in another part of the library. The parties are for children ages 8-11 and their parents. Just in case you were wonder ing, Amber and Henry are fic tional characters in novels for youngsters. There will be a variety of activities for our young party-goers and birth day cake, too. Also during National I would like to thank the residents of the Town of Winfall for all their support during elections. I look forward to serving you on Winfall Town Council.
