The race for Perquimans
County Commissioner was
decided by less than 200

the 4,284 votes cast. The
Democrat is currently the
board chair.
The second highest vote

Pirates to play for state volleyball title
SUSAN R. HARRIS

This time when the spot
light shines on them as they
make their entrance, the
Lady Pirates won’t be
unnerved.
Perquimans wiU make its
second straight appearance
in the 1-A state voUeybaU
title game Saturday at high
noon at Reynolds Coliseum
in Raleigh. The team earned
the trip by taking down
Princeton in Hertford 3-0
(15-2, 15-13, 15-7) Tuesday
night in the East Regional
Championship.
Odds are the Lady Pirates
will find themselves looking
through the net at
Hendersonville, the three-
time defending state cham
pions. Finals from the West
Regional were not available
at press time.
Perquimans owned the
first set of the 3-game
match. The Lady Bulldogs
scored first, but
Perquimans struck for
three with Ashley
Copeland’s first trip to the
line. Princeton scored one
more before Ashley
Rountree hit for four, then
Stefanie Harris finished it
off by serving points 8-15.
Janine Freitas was a bandit
at the net in that set.

high 19 points. Stefanie
Harris had nine points,
seven kills and several
blocks. Lisa Harris
slammed 10 kills and five
points. Copeland put down
seven with five points.
Freitas weighed in with five
kills, four blocks, and two
points. Stallings added
three points and Winslow,
two.
“They didn’t have a good
practice on Monday,” said

13-5. Rountree stepped up
big again at the service line,
shooting in six in a row
before losing her serve. Lisa
Harris put over two bombs
to tie it. Ashley Winslow
served a couple for the win.
Perquimans’ net play
wasn’t sharp in game two,
but Copeland and the
Harris duo killed Princeton
at the net in the final set.
The trio combined for 10
kills. Meanwhile, Rountree
continued to be impressive
at the service line, banging
in six straight to give the
homestanders an 8-1 edge.
The Lady Bulldogs man
aged to fight back to 8-7, but
hard-to-handle serves from
Megan Stallings and
Rountree, followed by three
scorchers from Lisa Harris,
sent them home with then-
first loss of the season.
