HARRIS Editor The race for Perquimans County Commissioner was decided by less than 200 votes. Shirley Wiggins, Mack Nixon, and Wallace Nelson were the top three vote-tak ers of the five candidates for the seats. Each voter could vote for only one candidate, with the three candidates earning the most votes seat ed. Randy Lassiter and Vernon Hammons ran strong campaigns also. Wiggins, the only incum bent who filed for a seat on the board, led the race with 1,078 votes, 25.16 percent of the 4,284 votes cast. The Democrat is currently the board chair. The second highest vote total went to Nixon with 953 votes or 22.24 percent of those cast. Nixon, a Democrat, lost his seat on the board in the 1998 elec tion after serving two four- year terms. He has served as both chairman and vice chairman of the board. A Republican, Nelson gave up his seat on the school board after two terms to run for commis sioner. Nelson received 882 votes, or 20.58 percent. Lassiter, a Democrat, got 822 votes and Republican Hammons, 549, in their first bids for public office. Wiggins carried her home precinct, ParksviUe, as well as East Hertford and Belvidere. 9/ Mf T r fpi '-Jk I.*' 9,-> iLl > mefilii Candidates and their representatives braved the cool election day temperatures and cloudy skies to do some last-minute campaigning at the polling places. Wiggins r)C\ Nelson Nixon Likewise, Nixon was strong in his home precinct, receiving over twice as many votes as Wiggins, his closest competitor in New Hope. He also carried West Hertford. Nelson’s strength was Bethel, the only precinct he carried. He was also strong in absentees with 151. Lassiter carried Nicanor, and came in second in Bethel, Belvidere and ParksviUe. Wiggins, Nixon and Nelson will take office during the December board meeting. Commissioners Bert Hayes, a Republican, and Archie Miller, a Democrat, did not seek re-election. Vote totals are unofficial untU the coun ty canvass later this week. County votes Democratic Perquimans voted Republican for presi dent by a slim margin, but Democrats car ried the rest of the state and federal races here. George Bush edged past A1 Gore, 2228- 2030, on the presidential baUot. Challenger Leigh McNairy slipped past incumbent Walter B. Jones Jr. in the race for the House District 3 seat. McNairy picked up 2,076 votes, while Jones trailed with 1,983. Mike Easley easily passed Richard Vinroot in the gubernatorial race, 2,600- 1,547. Likewise, Beverly Perdue got 2,472 votes to Betsy Cochrane’s 1,560 N.C. Senator Marc Basnight received 2,957 votes, double those that went to Republican Ronald Toppin with 1,277. Bill Culpepper earned the State House District 86 seat over Republican chaUenger Cheryl Byrd, 2,092-1,287. The county was strongly in favor of the university bonds, passing the referendum 2,487-699. Statewide returns were not avaUable at press time. Pirates to play for state volleyball title SUSAN R. HARRIS Editor This time when the spot light shines on them as they make their entrance, the Lady Pirates won’t be unnerved. Perquimans wiU make its second straight appearance in the 1-A state voUeybaU title game Saturday at high noon at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh. The team earned the trip by taking down Princeton in Hertford 3-0 (15-2, 15-13, 15-7) Tuesday night in the East Regional Championship. Odds are the Lady Pirates will find themselves looking through the net at Hendersonville, the three- time defending state cham pions. Finals from the West Regional were not available at press time. Perquimans owned the first set of the 3-game match. The Lady Bulldogs scored first, but Perquimans struck for three with Ashley Copeland’s first trip to the line. Princeton scored one more before Ashley Rountree hit for four, then Stefanie Harris finished it off by serving points 8-15. Janine Freitas was a bandit at the net in that set. The Lady Pirates strug gled in game two, using -tm high 19 points. Stefanie Harris had nine points, seven kills and several blocks. Lisa Harris slammed 10 kills and five points. Copeland put down seven with five points. Freitas weighed in with five kills, four blocks, and two points. Stallings added three points and Winslow, two. “They didn’t have a good practice on Monday,” said head coach Carolyn Rogers. “I told them before the Continued on page 6 The Lady Pirates earned their second trip to the state vol leyball championships in as many years with a big win in the regional title game Tuesday night. both time-outs and trailing 13-5. Rountree stepped up big again at the service line, shooting in six in a row before losing her serve. Lisa Harris put over two bombs to tie it. Ashley Winslow served a couple for the win. Perquimans’ net play wasn’t sharp in game two, but Copeland and the Harris duo killed Princeton at the net in the final set. The trio combined for 10 kills. Meanwhile, Rountree continued to be impressive at the service line, banging in six straight to give the homestanders an 8-1 edge. The Lady Bulldogs man aged to fight back to 8-7, but hard-to-handle serves from Megan Stallings and Rountree, followed by three scorchers from Lisa Harris, sent them home with then- first loss of the season.
