Kindergarten readiness program
Sometimes it’s tough
for parents, especially
first-timers, to know
whether a child’s behav
ior while interacting with
other children is appro
priate.
To help parents with
this behavior questions,
the Chowan/Gates
/Perquimans
Partnership for Children
has announced a kinder
garten readiness pro
gram funded by a two-
year grant from the
Governor’s Crime
Commission. Called The
Friendship Project, the
program focuses on diver
sity and peaceful conflict
resolution. It has been
designed and will be
spearheaded by Debra
Dawson, the
Partnership’s Early
Childhood Specialist.
The first workshop in
The Friendship Project is
scheduled for Thursday,
Oct. 3, 6:30—7:30 p.m. at
the Partnership’s head
quarters in the old White
Oak School at 123
Dillard’s Mill Road in
Tyner. It is geared toward
parents of children from
birth through age 5.
Titled “Alien
Behaviors: Who is The
Alien, Me or My Child?”,
the program will be led by
Dawson and will focus on
how a better understand
ing of children’s stages of
development can help
parents cope with their
children’s seemingly
inappropriate behavior.
Knowing what to
expect and when to expect
it as infants grow into
toddlerhood and beyond
can make a huge differ
ence in the way parents
and children interact
with one another, Dawson
said.
The goal of The
Friendship Project is to
help build a peaceable
community by working
with young children,
their parents, and their
teachers. The focus of
the Project is to teach
non-violent methods of
conflict resolution, as
well as acceptance of and
an appreciation for the
differences in people. The
workshops offered to par
ents and early childhood
teachers will help create
safe and helpful environ
ments that enable young
children to develop the
ability to problem solve
and be more accepting of
differences in others.
Classes will also be
held at licensed family
daycare homes, childcare
centers, and at the
Partnership for
Children’s Kids Learning
Central, where simple
lessons will help children
learn to solve problems in
ways that are more
accepting of differences
in others. Additionally,
several children will
receive long-term coach
ing in positive relation
ship building in order to
support their future suc
cess in school.
Barents and childcare
providers interested in
learning more about The
Friendship^ Project and
its future offerings or to
register for the October
seminar should contact
Dawson at 221-3030.
