2 The Perquimans Weekly, May 21, 2003 Happenings Memorial Day service There will be a Memorial Day ceremony at Cedar Wood Cemetery on Monday, May 26 at noon. Veterans are encouraged to wear a hat that will identify their branch of service. Headstart applications Perquimans County Headstart is accepting applica tions for the 2003-04 school year. Children must reside in Perquimans County and be 3 or 4 on or before Oct. 16. To apply, contact Josann Harrell at Perquimans Central School at 426-5949 or 426-5332, ext 267. Recreation classes Youth karate is held at the Recreation Department on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. The cost is $20 per month. Aerobics is held at the department on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights at 6. The cost is $2.50 per night. Athletic Boosters The Perquimans County Athletic Boosters wid meet Monday, June 2, at 7 p.m. At this meeting we wid be electing officers for the new year. NNC Black Chamber of Commerce The Northeastern N.C. Black Chamber of Commerce wid hold a retreat for aU Board of Directors on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. - noon. The retreat wdl be held at the Perquimans Business Center in Hertford. Aluiimi basketball game There will be an Alumni Basketball Game on Saturday, May 24,1-7 p.m. at PCHS. Class of 1988 Reunion The PCHS class of 1988 wdl hold its 15-year reunion on June 27 at the American Legion Building in Hertford. Saturday, June 28 is Famdy Day at Winfad park. Home-delivered meals program The Home-Delivered Meals Progreun needs volun teers to deliver a lunch meal to seniors in your commu nity. You can sign-up for one day a month and it only takes one hour of your time. PERQUIMANS COUNTY PUBLIC NOTICE Except for the Sheriff’s Department, Dispatch Office and Emergency Medical Services, all County Offices in the Perquimans County Courthouse, Courthouse Annex, Social Services, Agricultural Extension Service, Per quimans County Library and the Perquimans County Recreation Department will be closed on Monday, May 26, 2003 for observance of Memorial Day. Paul Gregory, Jr. County Manager 301173 Summer Breeze music series starts June 8 “Bluegrass and Barbecue” is the theme for the season’s first Summer Breeze Concert, set for Sunday, June 8 at 5:30 p.m. on the beautiful grounds of Hertford’s historic 1730 Newbold-White House. The popular acoustic folk and bluegrass band “Out In The Cold,” featur ing a mandolin, guitar, banjo and bass guitar, is sure to set toes to tapping. Barbecue plates from Captain Bob’s wfil be avail able to complete the experi ence. Plates are$6 each and must be reserved in advance by calling 426-7567. The Summer Breeze Concerts are sponsored by the Perquimans County Restoration Association and Perquimans Arts League and are made possi ble with support from Ferguson Enterprises and Crossroads Music. There is no fee for the three-concert series, but donations will be accepted. The second performance in the Summer Breeze Concert series is on Sunday, July 20 and will fea ture the Los Saxofonistas from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Los Saxofonistas is a sax ophone quartet that per forms a varied repertoire of high-energy music. Tickets for dinner plates to enjoy during the concert will be available in advance. Tommy’s Restaurant in Hertford will prepare the dinners. The concert series wtU conclude on Sunday, August 13, with the music of George Higgs. Higgs, a 1993 North Carolina Folk Heritage Award winner, is recognized as one of the finest musicians in the Piedmont Blues Tradition. He performs on harmonica and guitar.
