Chowan's head soccer coach, Nate WUey, actively recruited Burlamachi according to PCHS soccer coach John M. WeUs. Burlamachi scored six goals and four assists this past season as an outside midfielder for the Pirates. “Michael is very fast and can turn on a dime,” WeUs said. “He has a very strong kick, which allowed him to shoot on goal or cross it in front of the goal. Wood of Hertford earned Dean’s List honors at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Greensboro College Justin Robertson of Hertford has been named to the Dean’s List at Greensboro CoUege. FBLA Lindsey Elizabeth Glover of First Flight Middle School placed first in the middle school divi sion in the statewide Future Business Leaders of America competition in the computer technology cate gory. She is the daughter of William Glover of Kitty Hawk and the late Lisa Lindsey Hayes, and the granddaughter of the late WUlis Jessup. Taylor Johnson of Hertford was selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. NYLC is a unique leadership develop ment program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Johnson will be among 400 outstanding National Scholars from around the country to attend the Conference. The theme of NYLC is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. Throughout the 11- day Conference, Johnson will interact with key elect ed officials, political appointees and newsmak ers from the three branches of government, the media and the international com munity Highlights of the pro gram include welcoming remarks from the floor of the US. House of Representatives and a panel of discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club. Johnson will also meet with senators and a repre sentative or an appointed member of their staff to discuss important issues facing the nation. To complement the schedule of special meet ings and briefings, Johnson wiU also participate in a number of leadership skiLL- building activities, intro ducing the students to the three branches of govern- Taylor Johnson ment. In one role-play activ ity known as If I Were President, students act as the president and Cabinet members responding to an international crisis. Students also participate in a judicial simulation, called Testing the Constitution, in which they examine actual Supreme Court cases. NYLC culmi nates with the Model Congress, in which schol ars assume the roles of US. Representatives, and debate, amend and vote on proposed mock legislation.
