t 2 The Perquimans Weekly, June 8, 2005 Community Happenings Library program The Summer Reading Program at the library for June 8 features Stephanie Scott, a Deaf Services Specialist, who will sign a dragon story. Then, members of the Technical Dive Team will tell about some of their daring deeds. One June 15, the Hertford Baptist Church puppeteers will present a show and puppets wiU be made to take home. Durants Neck Ruritans The Durant's Neck Ruritan Club will hold a flea mar ket on Saturday, June 18 at 8 a.m. at the Durant's Neck Ruritan Club, 2151 New Hope Road. A variety of items including antiques, collectibles, appliances, clothing and toys will be available. Sausage biscuits, hamburg ers, hotdogs, coffee, and drinks will also be sold. Spaces (10x10) are available for $10, with one table $15. Call 264- 5711 to reserve a space. Proceeds wUl be used for schol arships and community service projects. Perquimans Arts League PAL will celebrate the beginning of its 11th year with a gala at the Newbold-white House and Perquimans Coimty Recreation Center on Saturday, June 18. The annual membership drive is also underway. There are many opportunities to share art or to volunteer clerical, computer, art display and sales skills through PAL and its gallery. Recreation offerings The Perquimans County Recreation Department will offer several lesson, camps and clinics this summer: Kayaking lessons, June 21-23,10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m., ages 9-14, register by June 14, $25. Tennis lessons, June 27-July 1, 9-11 a.m., ages 7-14, register by June 21, $40. Basketball camp, July 11-14, ages 7-10 9-11 a.m., ages 11- 14 noon-2 p.m., register by July 5, $25. Girls volleyball camp, July 19-21, 9-11 a.m., ages 9-12, register by July 12, $25. Day camps, July 25-29, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., ages 7-12, regis ter by July 15, $70; second session Aug. 1-5, register by July 22. Soccer camp, Aug. 8-12,11 a.m.-l p.m., ages 4-12, register by Jvdy 29, $45. Fast pitch softball clinic is being set up. A T-shirtis included for everything except kayak ing lessons. For information, call 426-5695. Walk for Life The 12th annual Walk for Life, a fund raiser to bene fit Albemarle Crisis Pregnancy Center, is set for Saturday, June 11 in Elizabeth City. Democratic Party gathering The Democratic Party will host a gather Party Democrats at the Winfall Thursday, June 9, 5-7 p.m. gathering of local Community Center on Hunter safety fund raiser The Perquimans County hunter safety teams are hav ing a fish fry catered by Captain Bob’s on Sunday June 26,4-7 p.m., at the old Be-Lo parking lot next to Popeye’s. Tickets are $6 and are available from team members and parents. Plates will be avaiable for purchase during the supper. Take out only. Health department clinics The Perquimans Health Department is open daily 8 a.m.-5 p.m. There is a night clinic every Thursday, 5-7 p.m. June 6-10: June 13-17: Monday: General all day. Tuesday: General adn pediatrics all day. Wednesday: General all day. Thursday: Women’s health service a.m., prenatal p.m. Friday: General, WIC and adult health all day. Summer feeding program menus June 13-17: Monday: Chicken nuggets with roU, corn, orange juice. Tuesday: Barbecue sandwich, green beans, applesauce. Wednesday: Cheeseburger, potato wedges, mixed fruit cup. Thursday: Chicken fillet sand wich, green peas, peach cup. Friday: Smoked sausage on bun, tater tots, juice. All meals served with milk. Breakfast will also be served at the school sites. Regular government meetings Elected governing bodies hold regular meetings each month. Locks OF Love Summer concert series begins Sunday ?*■ ir PHOTO BY JASON KING, THE CHOWAN HERALD Samantha Jordan, daughter of Wayne and Susan Jordan, shed her locks for the Locks of Love campaign, a nonprofit organization that creates wigs for young cancer survivors. This is the second time Samantha has grown her hair for the cause, this time donating approximately 11 inches. Wendy Jordan of Shear Pleasure in Edenton cut Samantha's hair, also donat ing her time for the cause. Pia hydrangea will be among the specimens on dis play at the AEA garden open house and plant sale. AEA holds garden open house, plant sale A Garden Open House and Plant Sale will be held at the home of Bob and Carolyn Hess on Sunday, June 19, 2-5 pm. Over a thousand plants, including shrubs, dayldies, hostas, and perennials wUl be for sale at low prices. There is no charge for the open house. Income from the plant sale wUl support activities sponsored by the Albemarle Environmental Association. In the past funds have been used for native gardens at area schools, recycling pro grams, scholarships and gifts to state parks. All plants are propagat ed on site by master gar deners without use of pesti cides and are suitable for local soils and climate. Visitors can see mature specimens growing in the extensive gardens. Master gardeners will be available to answer gardening ques tions. Refreshments will be served. The open house and plant sale will be held at Sunset Circle, Holiday Island. Arts Council with Grassroots funding assis tance. The series wUl begin on Sunday, June 12 with The Acoustic Coffee House Blend Band. The band wUl perform music of many genres including gospel, blue grass, folk, ‘70s and rock’n roU. The music wiU encourage hand-clapping and toe-tapping. Next on the schedule wiU be the Raleigh Flue Choir Trio on Sunday, July 17. The trio wUl perform beau tiful music from the Renaissance to the present. There shoiUd be a fine crowd on Sunday, Aug. 28 when the Perquimans County High School Band performs under the direc tion of director Chris Whitehurst. To celebrate the end of the series, there wiU be an old-fashioned fish fry catered by Captain Bob’s on the lawn. Supper tickets wiU be avaUable at the visi tors centers in Hertford and the Newbold-White House. All concerts are per formed on the lawn of the Newbold-White Historic Site. Audiences may bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics will enjoying the 5:30 p.m. performances. Law enforcement report Perquimans Sheriff Christopher Dallas of 116 Windward Drive was charged with habitual felon and assault by pointing a gun on May 28. bond was set at $76,500 secured. Lisa Storer of 438 Snug Harbor Road was charged with harassing phone calls and communicating threats on May 29. Bond was set at $500 secured. Wayne White of 1301 Ocean Highway North was charged with injury to per sonal property on June 1 and released on a written promise to appear. Ronnie Christian of 1900 Belvidere Road was charged with three counts of worthless checks and two counts of failure to appear on Jime 2. Bond was set at $400 secured. Sallie Gralton of 2254 Center Hill Highway was charged with harassing phone calls on June 2. Deloris White of 1613 Ocean Highway, Edenton was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on June 2 and released on a written promise to appear. Derrick Palmer of 388 Chinquapin Road was charged with disorderly conduct, simple assault and two counts of communicat ing threats and released on a written promise to appear.
