The couple, interpreters from Colonial Williamsburg, will present “Is it a Kitchen Garden or a Medicinal Garden?” Using many of the plants in the garden, the Cotners wlU discuss the medicinal and culinary purposes of these crops in the 18th century. Sharon Cotner joined the interpretive staff of the Pastuer and Galt Apothecary in Colonial Williamsburg in 1984. She has done research and lec tures on various 18th centu ry medical practices, including surgery, amputa tion, bloodletting, diseases of 18th century tradesmen, and various women’s disor ders. Most recently she has been examining 18th centu ry domestic books to review remedies for the relief of common condi tions. In 2003 Colonial Williamsburg published “Physick: The Professional Practice of Medicine in Williamsburg 1740-1775” written by the staff of the Apothecary, and in June 1999 New Jersey Medicine published Cotner’s article “Cancer in the 18th Century: A Historical Interpretation.” Cotner is, also a member of the American Association for the History of Medicine, the American Institute for the History of Pharmacy, the British Society for the History of Pharmacy, and the Medical Mueums Association. For the past 30 years Dennis Cotner has inter preted 18th century food- ways for Colonial Williamsburg, where he demonstrates and prepares 18th century foodways and recipes to the touring pub lic. His experience includes butchering, brewing, chocolate processing, ice cream making, as well as preparing meat, vegetables, and sweet items. In addition to his inter est in 18th century food- ways, Dennis Cotner is cur rently working in the WUliamsburg area to pro tect CivU War battlefields under danger of develop ment. There wiU be tickets for sale prior to the event for a box lunch - to be enjoyed on the lawn of the Newbold- White House at 12:30. The tickets will be approximate ly $10 dollars per person; the menu has yet to be determined. At 2 p.m. the presentation will begin and is anticipated to last an hour, with questions wel come following the event. The lecture is free and is sponsored by the North Carolina Community Foundation.
