The team battled two tough squads to get to the final against a formidable Dare County team. Perquimans fell, 5-1, but not without playing a hard- fought match. In the semi-final round. Military Notes Perquimans slipped past Washington County with a Nathan Gardner goal in the last 5 minutes of play. Perquimans’ first match up was a nail biter against Currituck. Currituck scored in the first 5 min utes only to see Perquimans fight back with a fast breakaway fin ished with a Gardner goal. Gardner put the team up 2- 1 when he received a long ball and put it in the net about 3 minutes before half time. Currituck knotted it at 2- all, and it was a tight game until sam Phthisic linked up with Gardner to send Perquimans into the semi final. Girls fall by one goal The lO-to-12-year-old All- Star Girls soccer team took second place in the fall tournament. Dare County neeed only one goal to defeat the strong Perquimans team in the final, a well-played game by both teams. In round one, Perquimans kicked off Edenton 4-0, with two goals from Heather Congdon and one each from Sha’Niqua Gray and Jessica White. The ladies defeated WiUiamston, a tougher opp- nent than Edenton, on a highlight-tape goal by Breann Fields. Maxfield has graduated from basic mili tary training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman stud ied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and cere mony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and spe cial training in human rela tions. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. She is the daughter of Sherri and Harold Maxfield of Hertford.
