County commissioners
took the first step Monday
night towards creating a
sanitary district for the
camping sections of Holi ¬
day Island now known as
Minzies Creek Village
(MCV).
Commissioners unani
mously accepted a petition
from MCV, an unincorpo
rated nonprofit associa
tion comprised of full time
residents and other prop
erty owners in the Camp
Holiday Island section as
well as other users of the
section’s wastewater treat
ment plant.
Petitions bearing sig
natures of more than 51
percent of the property
owners supported asking
commissioners to create
the district that will be
called Minzies Creek Sani
tary District. All of the sig
natures were mapped and
verified by County Man ¬
ager Frank Heath.
County commissioners
will now schedule a joint
public hearing with the
North Carolina Depart
ment of Environment and
Natural Resources in the
near future before the dis ¬
trict can be created.
“This is the first step,
but there are a lot of en
gineering issues, a lot of
financial issues the group
has to deal with,” said
