A Perquimans County
Wesleyan church, Elizabeth
City-based River City Devel
opment and a Baptist group
are teaming up this year for
the annual “Love PQ Week.”
From July 27 through July
31, volunteers will be work
ing in Perquimans County
to make small household re
pairs, clean up debris and to
“love on the community.”
Bagley Swamp Wesleyan
started the effort in 2013.
Pastor James Spaugh said
the group has been tweak
ing the effort with each
passing year. Partnering
with River City Develop
ment this year brings finan
cial expertise with dealing
with government dollars.
The group is also working
with the N.C. Baptist Men, a
group that has more experi
ence in more complicated
construction projects.
“We’re a church and we’re
not used to handling outside
donations from government,
and we wanted to make
sure the dollars were spent
in the right way,” Spaugh
said about the cooperation
with River City.
Spaugh said church mem
bers had planned to work
with River City on projects
in the Pasquotank County
this year, but the event hap
pened while students at
the church were attending
camp.
Past Love PQ events have
involved more cosmetic
improvements, like raking
leaves and painting. River

The end of school didn’t

School’s community out

This year the school is

Melissa Fields, the prin

read-and-feed effort was
the result of discussions on
how to stem the so-called

for the loss of learning dur

Sports Illustrated story
From Staff Reports
The relationship between
Helen Hunter and other
wives of former New York
Yankee players and coaches
was featured in a recent ar
ticle in Sports Illustrated.
Hunter’s late husband
Jimmy played for the New
York team from 1974 to
1979. He died in 1999 at his
Perquimans County home.
Thurman Munson, Hunt
er’s catcher, died in a plane
crash in 1979 leaving his
wife Diana a widow.
Munson and Hunter were
key contributors to the New
York teams that won three
straight American League
pennants from 1976 to 1978
and back-to-back World Se
ries championships in the
latter two seasons.
The SI feature written
by Kayla Lombardo looked
primarily at the relationship
between Helen Hunter and
Diana Munson.
“Helen and I are pretty
tight,” Munson said in the
article. “We’re the same
kind of women. We share
a similar life and memo
ries, and it’s just fun to get
together and talk about the
old times.”
Back in the 1970s they
carpooled to and frojn the
ballpark from their homes
in New Jersey.
“We all lived close to each
other,” Munson says. “When
the guys were gone, the
women would be together
here and there, and even
use the same pediatricians.
We all shared a similar expe
rience.”
“Normal is the word to.
describe it,” said Munson,
now a grandmother of
seven. “There was nothing
showy about it. It was just
our home, and it was good
for us.”
