Reugion/Sports THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7,2015 7 Obituaries — 1 1$ George McCoy Lankford Ann Rogerson Smith Carpenter Henry Clay Sawyer HERTFORD - George McCoy Lankford, a true son of Norfolk, passed away October 1, 2015, sur rounded by his loving family. Born in Leigh Memo rial Hospital, then in the Mowbray Arch section of Norfolk, in 1943, he was predeceased by his par ents, Greene Wright Lankford, Sr., and Josephine McCoy Lankford Heans, and his brother, Greene Wright Lankford, Jr. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Anne Hartsfield Lankford of Hertford, NC, and his daughter, Kimberly Ann (Paul) Lump kin of Montgomery, Alabama; his grandchildren, Paul Kirby Lumpkin, Jr., and Sally Ann Lumpkin; his brother, Robert G. (Sherry) Lankford of Nor folk; his sister-in-law, Annabelle (Paul) Salter, of St. Simons Island, Georgia; his brother-in-law, Richard D. Hartsfield, Jr. (Harriet), of Franklinton, NC; his cousin, Charles H. McCoy, Jr. (Diane), of Norfolk, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of friends from all walks of life. Educated at Taylor Elementary, Blair Middle and Maury High Schools, he graduated Granby High School and was a proud member of the Ocean View Aces. Following his graduation and a stint of employment with Tidewater Construction build ing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1963 and enjoyed a 22-year career culminating with the rank of Master Ser geant. During his military career he was stationed in Texas, Florida, Georgia, South Korea, Thailand, England, and West Germany. Among his numerous awards and citations were the Air Force Commen dation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with three service stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gal lantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Cam paign Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. Following his re tirement from the Air Force, he and Anne returned to Norfolk, where he worked and retired several times, from Stewart Sandwiches, Atlantic Domin ion and Enerspace, and acted as Anne’s proudest supporter throughout her banking career at First Virginia and BB&T. After their last retirement, George and Anne moved to Albemarle Plantation in Hertford, where they lived in the dream home they designed and built. They had spent the last several years gar dening, traveling and touring, making new friends, enjoying Duke sporting events, and searching out many of North Carolina’s famed barbecue “joints”. A long-time member of the Norfolk Boat Club, George was also a parishioner of Holy Trini ty Episcopal Church in Hertford, and was looking forward to becoming a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. The world has lost a proud American, a true pa triot, a husband without peer, an adoring father and grandfather, and a gentle and generous man. He enriched many lives with his tales of growing up in Norfolk and his varied life experiences. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Sentara Norfolk General and Sentara Heart Hospitals, especially Dr. Jonathan Philpott, Ms. Aisha Allen, RN, and Ms. Cynthia Davis-Green for their compassion, care and kindness. A memorial service to celebrate his life and mourn his loss was held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Christ and Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he had been christened and confirmed. Online condolences may be sent to the family at hdoliver.com GREENVILLE - Sylvia Ann Rogerson Smith Carpenter, 54, of Old Creek Road, left this world on October 2, 2015, at her home surrounded by love after a courageous battle with cancer, during which her positive outlook and bravery were an in spiration to many. Ann was born to LaClaire Winslow Rogerson Anderson of Elizabeth City and the late Joseph R. Rogerson Sr. of Hertford on Oct. 13,1960, and grew up in the Bear Swamp Community of Perquimans County. Her first playmate was her sister, Susan Harris (Phil) of Hertford, and the two girls would welcome a little brother, the late J. Richard Roger son Jr. After graduating from Perquimans High School, Ann earned a degree in social work from East Car olina University. She worked as a social worker for Nash County DSS, Beaufort County Hospital and Pitt County Hospital before being named Director of Patient and Family Services at Beaufort County Hospital. Ann was very fond of the Pactolus Community, where she lived most of her adult years. She was a founding member of the community’s rescue squad and a member of the Pactolus Baptist Church fami ly, where she served in many ways. In 1985, Garland Anderson joined Ann’s fami ly when he married her mother, bringing five new siblings: Gerry Anderson of Houston, Texas, Kathy Weeks (Steve) of Southern Shores, Lairy Anderson (Sheila) of Elizabeth City, Karen Carlsen (Dennis) of Kill Devil Hills, and Andy Anderson (Angela) of Winterville. She married the late Nathan Smith of Greenville, and gained a son, Nathan (Christina) and grand children, Nathan, Maria and Hunter. The shining moment of her life was the birth of a son, Brody Rogerson Smith, on Sept. 13,1995. Bro dy brought great joy, pride and happiness to Ann. Love and companionship returned to her life when Ann was introduced to Roger Carpenter, and the blended family included his daughters, Megan Carpenter of Greenville and Candi Carpenter of Sandy Cross and her son, Braxton. Also lovingly remembering Ann are her moth er-in-law, Rachel Carpenter of Nashville; sisters- in-law, Jackie Wooten, Debra Wooten, Michelle Holton and Melissa Flake; nieces Courtney Currin (Brian), Peyton and Tess, and Holly Stokely (Troy), Austin, Shane and Ashlyn; and nephew Andrew Harris (Kim), Kinley and Adelyn. A visitation was held in Hertford on Saturday. A memorial service was held on Sunday at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville. HERTFORD - Henry Clay Sawyer, 76 of 177 Woodland Church Road, Hertford, NC died Tuesi' day, September 29, 2015 at Sentara Albemarle Hospital. A native of Pasquotank County, he was the son of the late Charles LeRoy Sawyer and Gussie Lee White hurst Miller and the husband of Nellie Mill er Sawyer of the resi dence. He was a car penter, a member of Country Side Church of Christ, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Gussie Sawyer Belisario and husband Arevalo of Frederick, MD, and Gwendolyn Sawyer Hudson and husband Donald of Hertford, NC; two broth ers, James Theodore “Ted” Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC and Jimmy Ray Anderson of Kitty Hawk, NC; two granddaughters, Jessica Hudson Taylor and husband Ben of Elizabeth City, NC and Rachel Hudson Benge and husband Steven of Belvidere,, NC; and a great granddaughter, Mya Taylor. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Anna Anderson Kight of Elizabeth City, NC. A funeral service was held Friday, October 2, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Pastor Bob Brock officiating. The William Clar ence Jackson VFW Post #6060 rendered military honors.
