According to a 2013 impact study of indepen dent, locally-owned busi ness owners, more than 50 percent of the money you spend stays in the commu nity when you shop small, local businesses, he said. “According to the 3/50 Project, when you shop small and local, eveiy $100 spent returns $68 to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expen ditures,” Eley said. “If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays in Per quimans. The loop is a marketing project under written by Albemarle Plan tation to show what area marinas have to offer. For Nelson and Sandra, it was a surprise. “You’ve done all the right things,” Kay said. “You’ve got the post office right there, and you’ve got power and water. We weren’t ex pecting that.” The boat can carry 190 gallons of freshwater. One thing that Hertford’s marina doesn’t have is something few small mari nas offer — fuel. Even that wasn’t a negative thing for the couple. Their boat has two 120-gallon fuel tanks. Besides even if Hertford did have fuel, chances are they wouldn’t sell enough of it to ensure that the fuel was “fresh” Garrett said. The lack of a grocery store adjacent to the dock wasn’t an issue. “We’ve never had a prob lem with people offering to take us to one,” she said. “And besides, when I stock up on makeup, I end up with a year’s supply.” “You have everything per fect right here,” she said. The mqjor improvement she’d want to see is more signage by the waterfront.” The couple moved aboard Destinees in April 2013. After living aboard for a year, upgrading some of the equipment, and do ing some maintenance on the boat, they left Old Point Comfort in Hampton, Va. on a yearlong, 6345-mile cruise around America’s Great Loop.
