2 THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17,2016 MAINTENANCE Continued from 1 said. Some of the changes students won’t see. “We’ve upgraded our control systems, so we’re changing the way we oper ate on a day to day basis.” Heating and air system can bring in fresh air from the outside or heat and cool the air already inside the structure. In the past, the school system has been using 100 percent outside air. That’s expensive, and it’s also not required. “When you’re doing 100 percent, it runs the system into the ground fast,” Davi son said. One way to think about it is with automobiles the dash board sometimes has a switch that lets the driver bring in outside air or re circulate the inside air af ter it’s heated or cooled. The system may need some adjusting, but Da vison expects the school system will see energy savings. That’s money that could be used for class room functions since oper ating costs, like electricity and natural gas, are local responsibilities that are paid for by county taxpay ers. The school system has also looking at upgrading lighting. Perquimans Cen tral has been outfitted with LED lighting vs. fluores cent. That should pay off in terms of dollars, and in terms of maintenance. The LED lights are guaranteed for 100,000 hours of use. The fluorescent tubes are typically replaced every year or two, and the school system has hundreds of lighting fixtures. Davison said big savings can be had when the sys tem replaces older metal halide lights. “Every time a 1,000- watt metal halide turns on, it’s drawing 1,000 wants when when you have 15 of them, you’re hitting 15,000 watts.” If replaced with LEDs, “you will never know the difference,” Davison said. In the future students at Hertford Grammar School might be getting new desks and chairs. POST OFFICE Continued from 1 it faces Grubb Street and people have to back into traffic to get out of the parking lot. The old Winfall post of fice faced Main Street. Yates said he’s trying to convince the post office to build the new one facing Catherine Street. The old Winfall post of fice building was originally a general store and resi dence, according to Wm- fall’s official application to have it made part of a town historic district. Winfall Town Council man Ken Rominger said the post office building had been in poor shape for years. He knows the con ditions first hand: he was postmaster in Winfall from 1999 through 2003. “There were places SUBMITTED PHOTO The outside of the new Winfall Post Office will look something like this according to postal officials. where you had to step gin gerly,” Rominger said last year. Yates feared Winfall would lose the distinction of having a post office al together. There have been threats of that in the past. “We’ve been fighting for it for years,” Yates said.
