The awards presented by the federation honor individuals, associations, businesses and others who have exhibited unwavering commitment to conserva tion in the state. Maready, a member of the Marine Patrol for 10 years who patrols the Alli gator River and Albemarle Sound area. “I’m just honored to even be put in for it,” Maready said. Maready has solved involving the illegal use and/ or abandonment of commercial fishing gear, violations of size and creel lim ¬ MAREADY Team, visiting civic groups, schools and expos to promote the mission of the Marine Patrol and to educate the pub lic on fisheries re sources, rules, reg ulations and laws. Maready grew up in its, recreational and com mercial license violations, the illegal sale of seafood and larceny of gear. Some times, solving these cases involved undercover opera tions. Maready also serves as a field training officer for new hires and he partici pates in the newly formed Marine Patrol Education the Beulaville area gradu ated from East Duplin High School in 1988. After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Operation Desert Storm. While in the Air Force, he was a part of the security police unit. When he left the mili tary, Maready enrolled at Wayne Community College to study Fish and Wildlife Management; however, the program was cancelled be fore he could finish his de gree. He then entered into the Basic Law Enforcement Training program there, and graduated in 1993. That same year, he was hired by the Duplin County Sheriffs Department. In his 13 years with the sheriffs office, he moved up the ranks to ser geant, worked as a detec tive in the Investigations Division, and then was lieutenant over the Patrol Division. Maready lives in Colum bia with Ids wife, Christy; daughter, Zoe, 12: and son Gabriel, 17.
