at the Plantation, credits a
better marketing campaign
for the popularity of the Per
quimans County operation.
He estimates that busi
ness at the marina is up 38
to 30 percent this year.
“We have been imple
menting a new maintenance
schedule for one, and we’ve
been aggressively promot
ing the marina through the
‘Albemarle Loop,’” Law
rence said.
The Loop was a market
ing plan developed a few
years ago by the Plantation
to get boaters traveling up
and down the Intracoastal
Waterway to visit the re

The Loop has grown to
include nine marines, in
cluding the nine-slip facility
in Hertford and the nine-slip
marina in Edenton. A new
addition is Manteo.
The Plantation is also
spreading the word that
while it is in a gated commu

to use the marina and other
facilities there.

BARBER
Continued from 1
The last 20 years has been at
his own shop in the Harris
Shopping Center on Grubb
Street at the foot of Edenton
Road Street.
But when he first started,
Riddick said he liked the
idea of living in a big city
after growing up in Perqui
mans County.
His first job was at a bar
ber shop in Raleigh with 10
chairs.
“They were all in a straight
line, and I was the ninth
chair,” Riddick remembers.
That meant customers
had to walk past eight other
waiting barbers to get to
him.
“I wasn’t there very long,”
Riddick said.
From there he went to
Greensboro. That barber
shop had three chairs, but at
least Riddick had the num
ber one position.
“I stayed about a year and
half, but it was so expensive
to live there.
He decided to move back
east and worked for a time
at Ron-E-S Barber Shop in
Elizabeth City. In 1977 he got
the opportunity to work cut
ting hair at the Coast Guard
base in Elizabeth City.
“They supplied the space
and all I had to do is pay a
little rent and furnish my
own tools. It was a busy
job.”
He stayed at the Coast
Guard base until 1996 and in
1998 opened his own shop,
“Jimmy’s Barber Shop” in
Hertford.
Riddick didn’t want to re
ally talk about business, but
agreed it was not unusual
for men in the 1960s to get
their hair cut every week
or two weeks. Now it’s like
once every three months for
some and some men go to
beauty salons, not barbers.
Still at age 69 Riddick has
no plans to retire so long
as his health allows him to
continue.
SCHOLARSHIP
Continued from 1
Byrum had just completed
her freshman year at Perqui
mans High School when she
died of injuries sustained
in an ATV accident in June.
“Finding meaning in the loss
of a loved one feels almost
impossible,” said Perqui
mans County Schools Foun
dation Executive Director
Brenda Lassiter. “When
those we care about are
taken from us prematurely,
their deaths defy logic or
comprehension.
“The Foundation is so
privileged to received the
initial contribution of $500
to fund the Madelyn Marie
Byrum (Those Who Give
Back) Scholarship. In some
way, The Hertford Ladies
hopes that by creating this
scholarship in Madelyn’s
memory it will aid the pro
cess of family and friends as
they begin to absorb such a
tremendous loss. It is their
hope to perpetuate the spirit
and character of Madelyn
and honor her life, passion
for sports, scholarly studies
and genuine love of life and
other people.
“This scholarship will help
keep the memory of Mad
elyn alive while also improv
ing the life of someone else,”
said Lassiter. “This was cer
tainly Madelyn’s aspiration
in life as she always thought
of others before herself. Her
life epitomized helping, serv
ing and loving others.”
Madelyn was the daugh
ter of Paul Matthew Byrum,
Jr. and Carrie Bridgers By
rum. In addition to her par
ents, she is survived by her
brother, Branson Matthew
Byrum; grandparents Robin
and Warren Bridgers, Debo
rah and Paul Byrum; and
great-grandmothers, Helen
Bridgers and Ruby Saun
ders.
Anyone wishing to con
tribute to the Madelyn Marie
