The Town of Hertford had a 10" sewer
main fail resulting in a sanitary sewer
system overflow during Hurricane Mat
thew from Sunday, October 9, 2016 at
approximately 6 am to 9am. Over 15
inches of rainfall was recorded in town
and the surrounding area. Staff cal
culates the amount of rainwater that
mixed with sewer water that was dis
charged to be 100,000 gallons. The
mixture of rain water and sanitary sew
er water was discharged into the Up
per Perquimans River. The significant
amount of rainfall helped dilute the
impact of the discharge. Town crews
cleaned and sanitized areas around the
discharges as soon as the weather al
lowed for the work to safely be done.
North Carolina General Statute Article
21 Chapter 143.215.C requires news
release by public operators within 24
hours of the detection of a wastewa
ter overflow in excess of 15,000 gallons
that reaches surface water. Questions
