In the Perquimans case, Ward specified either a new public library or a high school football field. In the case of COA, it was a library or a baseball field. COA intends to use fund ¬ tion at Perquimans County Middle School at 2 p.m., Jeff Miller at 2:30 p.m. and Jer emy Melson at 3 p.m. “If the weather stays nice we should have a good crowd again,” Layden said. “More people keep coming and the reason is people leave happy. Tickets for the Jollification are $20, and include dinner, music, and admission to tour sites. They can be purchased at the Newbold-White House Historic Site (426-7567), the Perquimans County Cham ber of Commerce (426-5657), ing from the statewide Con- nectNC bond approved by voters in March to help pay for the library renovations on the main campus in Eliz abeth City. Perqui mans County also failed to raise the money needed to start building a new ath letic complex on donated land across from the high school. But at the time before his death, Ward chaired a com mittee formed to raise funds for the Perquimans project. The original land offer in 2010 from Dr. William Nixon was he would give the land to the school system if it built an athletic complex in five years. That didn’t hap pen, and Nixon has since extended the offer. Meanwhile COA trustees voted 11-5 in April 2015 to suspend the athletic pro gram and in October 2015 it voted to make the suspen ¬ White and Geneva White Britt. For now the COA board has tabled a decision on what to do until their next meeting. At the time trustees sus pended athletics the second time, the college was spend ing approximately $90,000 a year on the program. Col lege officials said the pro gram needed more money, however, to field another women’s team to comply with federal anti-discrimina tion rules At least one Perquimans County commissioner said that board won’t decide “anytime soon.” Two members of the six- member board, Chair Jan ice Cole and Commissioner Matt Peeler aren’t seeking re-election.
