Hertford Rotary Club President Tom Hartley poses
with students of the month Wayne Worley and Victor
Wilkins.
Rotary honors
Wilkins, Worley
From Staff Reports
Victor Wilkins and
Wayne Worley, seniors at
Perquimans County High
School, were recently rec
ognized by the Hertford
Rotary Club as students of
the month.
Wilkins is an active
member of the Perquimans
County High School Fire
Tech Academy.
“I like that through
this program I get to do
things that you normally
wouldn’t do in school,” he
said. “Some of these things
include putting out fires,
visiting fire departments
in our area, and learning
exactly what it takes to be
a firefighter. I didn’t know
that I wanted to become
a firefighter until I started
the Fire Tech program. I
will be taking Fire Tech III
next semester. Once I fin
ish that class I will be able
to be a paid firefighter.”
Wilkins is a firefighter on
the Hertford Volunteer Fire
Department since Novem
ber of 2015. He wanted to
join the fire department be
cause of his fire tech class ¬
es and to learn leadership
skills and responsibility.
He also works at Captain
Bob’s. He chose to get ajob
so that he could assist with
taking care of himself and
to learn a sense of respon-
sibility. He is scheduled to
graduate this June.
Worley is an honor stu
dent with a 3.6 cumulative
grade point average and has
played on the football team
for his entire high school
career. He has also served
as the captain of the Pirates
for the last three years.
He is also a volunteer
firefighter. He spends
many hours serving oth
ers through this volunteer
service coupled with learn
ing essential on the job
skills for firefighting. He is
enrolled in the Fire Tech
Academy and in the EMT
classes offered at the high
school.
Worley plans to attend
a four-year college upon
his graduation in 2017. He
would like to maj or in sports
science while continuing to
serve his local community
through his volunteer work
as a firefighter.
