Rotary honors Wilkins, Worley From Staff Reports Victor Wilkins and Wayne Worley, seniors at Perquimans County High School, were recently rec ognized by the Hertford Rotary Club as students of the month. Wilkins is an active member of the Perquimans County High School Fire Tech Academy. “I like that through this program I get to do things that you normally wouldn’t do in school,” he said. “Some of these things include putting out fires, visiting fire departments in our area, and learning exactly what it takes to be a firefighter. I didn’t know that I wanted to become a firefighter until I started the Fire Tech program. I will be taking Fire Tech III next semester. Once I fin ish that class I will be able to be a paid firefighter.” Wilkins is a firefighter on the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department since Novem ber of 2015. He wanted to join the fire department be cause of his fire tech class ¬ es and to learn leadership skills and responsibility. He also works at Captain Bob’s. He chose to get ajob so that he could assist with taking care of himself and to learn a sense of respon- sibility. He is scheduled to graduate this June. Worley is an honor stu dent with a 3.6 cumulative grade point average and has played on the football team for his entire high school career. He has also served as the captain of the Pirates for the last three years. He is also a volunteer firefighter. He spends many hours serving oth ers through this volunteer service coupled with learn ing essential on the job skills for firefighting. He is enrolled in the Fire Tech Academy and in the EMT classes offered at the high school. Worley plans to attend a four-year college upon his graduation in 2017. He would like to maj or in sports science while continuing to serve his local community through his volunteer work as a firefighter. Auxiliary collecting food until next week From Staff Reports Hertford American Le gion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 126 is sponsoring a local Food Bank Holiday Food Drive. The drive is under way and will run through Nov. 18. Canned goods, dry type boxed non-perishable food items are being collect ¬ ed. Food can be dropped off at the American Legion Post 126 Building, 113 W. Acad emy St. across from the Per quimans County Library.
