8 THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9,2016 t»* Sports/Schools Looking for the perfect reload (bullet) I finally saw a big deer. It was green and pulling a chisel plow. Not want ing bother the fanner and not want ing him to bother me, I headed on back home. That was OK because what I really wanted to do was shoot the black rifle. I gve testing reloads. gj Forming 300 AAC Blackout brass from .223 was harder than advertised. Each casing mouth has to be deburred and chamfered after the initial cutting and again after trimming. My left thumb and forefinger were rubbed raw from holding the chamfer/debur tool. I had the casing in a holder made for the purpose and the holder chucked in a cordless drill. Cham fering is done on the inside of the case mouth deburring is on the outside. This whole process goes like this. Cut case with a die grinder, clean up the inside and : outside of the mouth. Lube the case and run it through the re size die. Use a case trimmer to trim to correct length. Chamfer/ debur again, then into the tum bler for cleaning and polishing. Now they are ready for prim ers. 1 did about 100. It takes a while. After all the case prep, I load ed 15 cases, three each with different amounts of 2400 pow der, 14gr, 14.5gr, 15gr, 15.5gr and 16gr. The idea is to find the sweet load. I’m using Nosler 110 Do It Outdoors Wade Betts Grain Varmageddon bullets. The Nosler’s Varmageddon line is made for the high volume shooter, like someone out west shooting prairie dogs. I’m using them because they are relatively inexpensive and should make dramatic ex plosions on water filled milk jugs. The 15.5 grains of powder gave me a one-inch group at 50 yards. I might fine-tune the load by loading some more in 1/10 grain increments. But for right now I’m happy. Keep in mind that it’s me doing the shooting and I’m using a red dot sight. A real scope and a real shooter would yield tighter groups. Angles are measured in de grees and each degree is di vided into 60 minutes. Minute of angle accuracy is 1” at 100 yards, 2” at 200 and so on. To understand minute of angle, imagine a straight line extend ing from the shooters eye to the target 100 yards away. Now think about another straight line that extends from the shoot ers eye to a spot 1” away from the end of the first line. The angle created will be 1/60 of a degree. As the two lines continue the distance between the far ends of the lines will be greater, but the angle will re main the same. Most scope adjustments are A14 minute of angle for each click or mark, four clicks should move the point of impact 1” at 100 yards. I am, for the most part, happy with min ute of milk jug or minute of deer marks manship and or accuracy. Real shooters want minute of angle groups. I would continue the geometry les son, but to tell the truth I’m bored with it myself and besides I’ve got to load some more Blackout ammo, go shoot a milk jug and make a video. Be safe and do it outdoors. Red Ribbon Celebration ■ wife- SUBMITTED PHOTO Students at Hertford Grammar School and Perquimans Central School celebrate being drug free by wearing red.
