8 THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16,2016 SPORTS Son’s rifle brings back a lot of memories T he little buck was coming from behind me and looking like he would be veiy close when he arrived. So I put my ear plugs in (I hate to shoot the hand cannon without hearing protection). When he was behind the tree limb, that I left there for just this scenario, I raised the old Smith and Wesson. I’ve heard it said that fly ing in an airplane can be described as long periods Dolt Outdoors Wade Betts of boredom punctuated on each end by a few minutes of sheer terror. I would say almost the same thing about deer hunting. I’m usually excited to hit the woods and after a short time, I’m bored and then if a deer shows up I have to work at calming myself down. This season I have been hunting with C.W’s rifle. I have mixed feelings about his outdoor equipment, I think he would want me to use his stuff, but it’s hard, lots of memories. The rifle is a Savage Model 110 in .270 Winchester Short Magnum with a nice Redfield scope. A great “beanfield” rifle. As the handgun came up I tried to focus on the open sights. Legal shooting time ends at one half hour af ter sunset and on the West side of a woodlot there is plenty of light right up un til that time. But, inside the woods or on the shady side of the woods, not so much. I couldn’t see the sights. So I holstered the 44 and turned the magnification down on the rifle scope. The stand has a railing to help keep me in and to act as a shoot ing aid. The deer was so close I had to raise up in the seat in order to shoot down at him. The .270 short mag is designed to kill dear on the other side of the bean field. At 15 yards he never knew what hit him. Walking to get the 4-wheeler, when I got close enough A.C. asked why I didn’t answer his text. I told him I was busy. “Doing What.” “Tagging a deer.” Lat er when I checked my phone the test message was “well” and then “Did u shoot.” The Polaris made short work of fetching the deer. My com panion says that after the kill is when the work starts. I tell him it is a labor of love. A.C. is not much on cleaning a deer but he makes a fine bar tender. Maybe one day the stars will line up and I’ll get the take a deer with a hand gun. For now the tenderloins sure were delicious, the next morning for breakfast.
