Godfrey Jacqueline Faye Bunch Ward BELVIDERE - Jessie Mae Winslow Williams, 97, of 231 Ridge Road, Belvidere, died peacefully at her residence on Thurs day, November 8, 2018. A native of Perqui mans County, she was born on November 6, 1921 and was the daugh ter of Jesse Thomas Winslow, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Chappell Winslow. A beloved wife & mother and a dot ing grandmother & great-grandmother, Mrs. Williams leaves behind HERTFORD - Katherine Ownley “Maw” God frey, 79, of 517 Castleton Drive, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2018. Mrs. Godfrey was born in Elizabeth City on October 9, 1939, and was the daughter of the late David Cain and Be atrice Dail Ownley. For merly employed as a Case Worker with the Department of Social Services, she had also owned Memory Dolls in Elizabeth City, where she even eryoyed play ¬ a legacy of deep love and devotion to her fami ly. She was a dedicated farmer’s wife, passionate homemaker, and loyal caregiver to many. A long- time member of Up River Friends Meeting, she served on several committees in her earlier years and especially en,joyed her time teaching children’s Sunday school. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by four sis ters: Allie Winslow, Clarine Winslow, Delsie White, and Millie Eder; a brother: Jesse Thomas (J.T.) Winslow, Jr.; two brothers-in-law: Dorus Copeland and Edmond White; a granddaughter: Staci Crain. She is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Herbert Lee Williams, Jr. They were mar ried on March 17, 1945. She is also survived by a sister: Blannie Copeland of Tyner; a brother-in- law: Paul Eder of Winter Park, FL; two daughters: Phyllis Watts (Kenny) of Raleigh and Darlene Ben ton of Charleston, SC; two sons: David Williams (Annette) and Kelvin Williams of Belvidere; seven grandchildren: Thomas Crain (Angela) of Willow Spring and Amanda Thompson (Brad) of Wake Forest; Melanie Hebert of Augusta, GA and Trev or Benton (Ashley) of Greenville, SC; Lynette Saw yer (Kevin), Ashley Williams (Katie), and Tina Wil liams, all of Belvidere; fifteen great-grandchildren: Joseph, Wilson, and Griffin Crain of Willow Spring; Chase, Spencer, Blake, and Grant Thompson of Wake Forest; Ricky and Zach Hebert of Augusta, GA; Jackson and Molly Benton of Greenville, SC; and Jacob and Leah Sawyer, Nathan and Luke Wil liams, all of Belvidere. A special thank you to Dr. Karl Brandspigel, for his many years of care and concern, and to Albe marle Home Care and Hospice, for their recent kindness and support. A memorial service was held Monday, Novem ber 12, at 11:00am at Up River Friends Meeting by Pastor Chuck Hartman. Friends greeted the family in the church fellowship hall immediately follow ing the service and all other times at the home. An inurnment will be scheduled in the Up River Cem- eteiy at a later date when the love of her life joins her. She was a longtime and faithful member of Berea Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David “Pep” Godfrey. Surviving are her husband and the love of her life for 62 years, Preston Godfrey; their children, Mick ey Godfrey (wife Sharon), Kathy Fairfax (husband Doug), Angie Dawson (husband Randy), and Chris Godfrey; her brothers, Sam and Wesley Ownley and their families; her grandsons, Everett Meads (wife Cassie), Eric and Corey Midgett, Perry Daw son, and Christopher “Cain” Godfrey. Katherine also leaves six beautiful great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Novem ber 18th, at 2:00 p.m. in Berea Church of Christ, and will be conducted by the Rev. Perry Dawson. A pri vate family burial service will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation on Saturday, November 17th, from 2 to 4 pm at Katherine and Preston’s home. Mrs. Ward was bom in Chowan County on No vember 8, 1943, and was the daughter of the late Otto Emmit Bunch and Novella Winslow Bunch Perry. A homemaker, she was a member of Hap py Home Pentecostal Holiness Church, its Young at Heart group, had served as a teacher for Life- liners and the Beginners Sunday School Class, and as long as her health permitted, she volunteered in the nursery where she especially loved rocking the little babies. In earlier years she had also served as a 4-H leader. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Ivey Ward, Jr.; her step-father, James Lawrence Perry; and a brother, Horace McCoy Bunch. Surviving are her daughter, Debbie Byrum and husband, Johnny; two sons, Ivey Ward, III and Ja son Ward, all of Tyner; two sisters, Patricia Parks and husband, Eddie, of Belvidere, and Gail Cope land and husband, Don, of Tyner; a brother, Billy Bunch and wife, Barbara, of Granite City, IL; a sis ter-in-law, Yvonne Ward of Tyner; and five grand children, Kallie Byrum, Gabrielle Bunch and hus band, Nick, Chase Ward, Hayden Ward, and Tyior Winslow. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in Happy Home Pentecostal Holiness Church, and will be conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Wal ter Byrum. Burial will follow in the church ceme tery. Friends may join the family at the residence. Ellis EDENTON - Denise Mann Winslow “Denney” Ellis, 56, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018, in Vidant Chowan Hospital. “Denney” was from Perquimans County, and was the daughter of Elva Mann Winslow of Hertford, and the late Cecil Edward Winslow. A graduate of Elizabeth City State University with a Bachelor’s of Sci ence in Education, she was a former teacher in the Edenton-Chow an School System, hav ¬ Betty G. Matthews HERTFORD - Alpha Betty Godfrey Matthews, 93, formerly of West Grubb Street, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018, in Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation. Mrs. Matthews was bom in Perquimans County on October 10, 1925, and was the daugh ter of the late Abraham Lincoln “Abe” Godfrey, Sr. and Carra Ward God frey. A homemaker, she was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to her par ents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Edward “Ned” Matthews, Jr.; sisters, Marie G. Deal, Agnes G. Ivey, Gezelda G. Gurkin, Kath erine G. Byrum, Daphna G. Lane, and Frances G. Spivey, and a brother, Abe L. Godfrey, Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Dianne M. McPher son and husband, Douglas, and Linda M. Bright and husband, William Douglas, all of Elizabeth City; a son, Walter Ken Matthews and wife, Cheiyl, of Hertford; a sister, Jean G. Cartwright and husband, Edward Lee, of Elizabeth City; a sister-in-law, Do ris Godfrey of Hertford; seven grandchildren, April Jones (Matt) of Apex, Joseph “Joey” Overman (Amanda) of Clayton, Dawn Overman-Beamon (Albert) of Holly Springs, Kimberly Powell (Lee) of South Mills, Craig Matthews (Jessica) of Hertford, Jason Matthews of Hertford, and Kaitlyn Birch of Hertford; and ten great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel and was conducted by the Rev. Carroll Bundy. A private burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends joined the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service. A memorial service was held Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Cre matory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and was offici ated by the Revs. David Brooks, Gary Stanley, and Thomas Biggs. A private burial will be on the fami ly plot in Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford. Museum to hold decorating workshop From Staff Reports The Museum of the Albe marle will hold a workshop called “Deck Those Halls” on Saturday from 10 am. until noon. Using metal containers of various styles and faux greenery, participants can create an arrangement that is both modern and vintage. Letters spelling out the word ‘Joy’ or words includ ing ‘Merry’ and ‘Peace’ can be added as well. A selec tion of metal containers has been collected includ ing farmhouse, vintage, and modem. Participants may choose from those as soon as their registration and payment are received. Each project will be individual ¬ ized by choice of containers, letters, words, and ribbon if desired. All supplies will be pro vided in the workshop fee. The price includes a catered lunch by Kathy’s Kreations. No prior decorating ex perience is necessary. The workshop is designed for adults or teens and is suit able for club or groups on an alternate date. Pre-registration and pay ment is required.
