THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26,2018 3 Seniors Show ^eir Thanks Happenings The Perquimans County Senior Center celebrated and had a time giving thanks with special desserts, fellowship, afternoon games with “Minute to Win It” and even a cake walk. UTILITY Continued from 1 can pinpoint where homes can be made more efficient, but Finance Director Cindy Sharber said that only goes so far. “We do offer it, but if they rent unless the landlord gets on board you’ve done nothing. You have to get the landlords on board.” Mayor Reid he said in one case, a customer with a huge bill had a window on the second floor that was left open. The meeting, which was called on short notice, was questioned by one resident before the board even called it to order. Edgar Salvo, a Market Street resident, said it was a violation of North Carolina’s open meetings law. The meeting was also held in an unusual place, the town’s fire department and not Hert ford Town Half That decision was made because the meet ing started at 10 am. and the town’s annual Christmas par ty was already scheduled for NOTICE Perquimans County Tax Department All unpaid 2018 County and Municipal Property Taxes will become delinquent after January 5, 2019. Enforced collections will begin after that date. The Perquimans County Tax Department will be complying with the N.C. General Statutes for the collection of all delinquent taxes. The following procedures will be implemented to collect the delinquent taxes: 1. Garnishment of wages 2. Attachment of bank accounts 3. Levy on personal property 4. File foreclosures on real property 5. Attachment of Income tax refunds Bill Jennings Perquimans County Tax Administrator noon at the fire department Councilman Jackson called Salvo out of order, and said 36 hours notice was provided and he called on the town’s police chief to eject Salvo from the meet ing. Jackson was told that only the mayor could do that, and Salvo remained at the meeting. Jackson wanted the spe cial meeting because he wanted the board to act quickly to replace Archie Aples, who is resigning from the body as of Jan. 1. Mayor Reid was adamant that no decision on the va cancy would be made Fri day, and that the decision on a replacement would be made in February. Reid made his point that he wasn’t expecting action on any of the three issues on the agenda, only discussion. “There are three times we’re taking a look at,” and repeated that three times. “I hope you get my message.” Jackson pressed the issue and said for the good of the town, the board must fill the vacancy quickly. “You are not in favor of it, so you are trying to stop it,” Jackson said to the mayor. Norman and Jackson pressed to bring the issue up on Jan. 7. The issue will be discussed before the reg ularly scheduled meeting. In the only other item on the agenda, the board agreed to create a position of assistant finance officer. Town Manager Pamela Hurdle said Sharber is the only person who knows some of the things about her job. If she were to retire, the town would lose that knowledge. So the town is looking at creating the finance as sistant position, with a sal ary of $27,500 to $28,875 for somebody to work with Sharber and learn the job. The money will come from unused salary funds already in the budget. Hurdle said adding the position would also solve the problem that shows up on the audit every year that there isn’t a clear separation of duties in the finance de partment.
