Perry, DDS/PA, 68, of Hertford, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2021 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Douglas was born in Chowan County on May 28,1952 and was the son of the late William Dew ey Perry, Jr. and Clara White Perry. The owner and oper ator of Dr. Douglas W. Perry General Dentistry in Hertford, he was still practicing dentistry un til his passing. A graduate of Perqui ¬ EDENTON - Colon Philip Butler, CDR, USCG Ret., 91, of 3018 Rocky Hock Road, passed away on Sunday evening, February 7, 2021 in his home. Bom in Perquimans County on July 20, 1929, he was the last surviv ing of 12 children bom to the late George Wil liam and Lula Simpson Butler. His seven sisters were Beatrice Barclift, Verna Butler, June Read, Lula Butler, Blanche Campen, Mattie Butler, and Nellie Lewis; and mans County High School with scholastic hon ors, he then attended NC State University until his draft number was called, and so then joined the US Coast Guard. While in boot camp in Cape May, NJ, he attained honor man graduating first in his class affording him his choice of a duty station. His first choice was Elizabeth City where he served four years, then to Portsmouth, VA for four years, only to come back to Elizabeth City for his last four years. His course of study in the Coast Guard was dentistry, a trade he learned quickly and proficiently. It was a trade he would make his career. While in Elizabeth City he started going to Col lege of the Albemarle and worked at Belk Tyler and sold Mason shoes. Once he completed his studies at College of the Albemarle he attended and gradu ated from Elizabeth City State University and then in 1989 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. An outdoorsman, he loved working outside in his garden and was always trying something new to grow to sell at his parents produce stand. One day at the stand, a mother and her daughter stopped by, and 18 days later he would marry the love of his life, Cheryl Lindsey, in Columbus, OH. Not long after, a new passion started, Peruvian Paso horses. Showing horses became a joy for him and his dental office was adorned with many blue ribbons from those showings. He was definitely the “Country Doctor”, with chickens, goats, and pot bellied pigs playing in the yard around his of fice. But his ultimate joy was getting people out of pain and creating beautiful smiles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Marilyn Joyce Lindsey. Surviving along with his wife of 31 years, Cher yl Lindsey Perry, are his two brothers, Donald E. Perry (Yilei Bing) of Charlotte and David B. Perry (Elsie) of Hertford; nieces and a nephew, Meredith, Amanda (Mark), William (Marisa), all of Charlotte; a great-nephew, Braxton, and a great-niece, Sloan. Also surviving are Cheryl’s father, James W. Lind sey of Florida; her sister, Kathleen Miller of Cleve land, OH; and two nephews, Austin and Alex Mill er. According to Douglas’ wishes, no services will be held and a private burial will be held at a lat er time. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, no formal visitation at the funeral home or at their residence his four brothers were Wayland, Hudson, George, and Fenton Butler. Mr. Butler retired in July 1983 after serving for more than 33 years in the United States Coast Guard, and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. As his career took him to many areas across the United States, he joined several church families including Nansemond River, Bal lard’s Bridge, and Rocky Hock Baptist church es. As an active member of these church families, he faithfully served as a Sunday School and Bible study teacher, and as a deacon. He also enjoyed membership in Centennial Masonic Lodge #221 AF & AM, in Salisbury, Maryland for more than 60 years. Surviving are his wife of nearly 67 years, Ada Nixon Butler; a son, Glenn Philip Butler; and two daughters, Cynthia Williams and her husband, Car los, and Debra Sebastian and her husband, Steve. In addition, he is survived by three grandchildren, Philip Whittaker, Ryan Whittaker, and Storm Se bastian. He also leaves three great-grandchildren, Colby, Olivia, and A.J. Whittaker, and several niec es, nephews, and extended family members. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, a small private service for his wife, children, and grandchildren will be held in Rocky Hock Baptist Church on Thursday, Febmary 11th. Following this service, the committal rites and military honors will be ren dered on the lawn in front of the church at 2:00 p.m. This portion of the service is open to all family and friends. A private burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford. No formal visitation is being held, however friends may visit with the family on the church lawn following the service. Masks and social dis tancing measures are required. FROM STAFF REPORTS Perquimans Emer gency Services reports a single vehicle acci dent that ended in trag edy Sunday afternoon within the 800 block of Ocean Highway. First responders ar rived on scene around 3:34 p.m. to discover a sport utility vehicle in the ditch that had been transporting seven peo ple. Five of the occu pants were transported by Perquimans County EMS to Sentara Albe marle Hospital, where one of the occupants succumbed to injuries sustained as a result of the accident. After giving careful consideration to the lim itations on local govern ments’ staff time and the availability of audit staff, Treasurer’s Office extend ed the deadline for June 30,2020 audits, both finan cial and compliance, to January 31,2021. Treasurer’s Office Spokesman Day Way said annual audit report pro vides essential informa tion on the financial con dition of the entity to its officers, elected officials, its creditors and grantors, and citizens. He said there are no statutory penalties for filing a late audit, but if the city were to come before the LGC for debt approval, commission members would question why the city missed the deadline if they were sig nificantly late. Bond was set at $100 secured. ■ Devin Carmichael of Shady Lane, Hertford, was arrested Jan. 29 and charged with driving while license revoked. Bond was set at $500 unse cured. ■ Domonique-J. Percer of Elizabeth City was arrested Jan. 30 and charged with possession of marijuana and failure to appear. ROUND-UP Continued from Al delay in opening the Elaine Riddick Charter School in Hertford. Though the school’s charter has been approved by the state Board of Education, the state delayed the school’s planned Aug. 17 opening because the school’s building was not ready, enrollment re quirements had not been met, and there were unresolved matters regarding insurance. State BOE did not comment about the school’s status in time for this report. Principal Mary Felton said the charter school’s Board of Directors request ed the the delay because of complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Per Chiquita Sutton, Mt. Best’s key accountant resigned from his firm during the Town’s sched uled audit. Also, Town Hall had a software sys tem crash, underwent software upgrades and Hurricane Dorian all neg atively impacted the au dit’s preparation. a contract recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The $3.9 million contract, awarded to Rose Brothers Paving of Raleigh, includes milling and resurfacing U.S. 17 Business (Queen Street) in Chowan County, milling and resurfacing U.S. High way 13 in Gates County, and milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction on several secondary roads in Chowan, Gates and Perqui mans counties. Work on the projects can begin as soon as March 22 and is expected to be complete by the end of June 2022.
