Mayor Pro Tern Ashley Hodges said if Monday’s itin erary had moved forward as planned, he computed that the meeting could’ve easi ly lasted 24 hours if every speaker used their fully al lotted time limits for speak ing. Though the multi-hour meeting was shorter by the usual council standards, longtime council watchers still had a chance to see tempers flare, insults fly and parliamentary proce dure brandished as Mayor Earnell Brown moved the sometimes contentious meeting along. For a small taste of this bile, see Martha Border’s letter to the editor on page A4. One item that was strick en from the agenda for the time being was the Mayor Brown’s written documen tation on councilman Jack- son’s fitness for office and the Mayor’s letter from for mer Mayor Sid Eley about Jackson and Councilman Frank Norman. Perquimans Weekly is making inquiries as to what this item is all about, so stay tuned. Citizens’ concerns is a portion of the meeting where John Q Public can voice his/her thoughts about Town Hall. Among the highlights of citizens’ concerns was a speech by Tini Brinn of Front Street who spoke in glowing terms of the prog ress being made in Hertford. He said when new residents move into the community, they ask two questions - what’s up with town council and what is being done to eliminate blight. Brinn noted how Zac- chaeus Legal Services of Trenton is bearing down hard on those property owners who owe back taxes. On that note, Brinn spoke about the longstand ing need for code enforce ment from Town Hall as a means to reduce blight. A point echoed by Rhon da Waters of North Church Street who said citizens have a right to feel safe and know that the structures around the community are of a sound nature. See COUNCIL, A2 LEPER to The Editor Word of Praise Thank you to the Carolina Moon Theater (http://caro- linamoontheater.org/) for returning in-person commu nity theater to Hertford! Along with 40 other area residents, I enjoyed being part, of the mask-off audi ence for a close-in and often edgy performance of Dave Goss “Andy” and Lynne Ray mond “Melissa”. The play, “Love Letters”, is a timely look back at the humorous and humbling life choices of two characters who look back on a lifetime of letter correspondence. Lynne’s punchy and some times shocking delivery are complemented nicely by Dave’s intonations and facial expressions. Keep the performances coming! JENNIFER SPRING Hertford Editor’s Note: "Love Letters” will be performed at 7p.m. June 25 and June 26 at the Carolina Moon Theater. Tickets can be purchased online at car- olinamoontheaker.org or at Carolina Trophy at 109 N.
