Sheriff probes gunfire damage to wind turbine
Wallio: Damage appears to be
from bird shot from shotgun
BY CHRIS DAY
The Daily Advance
The Pasquotank County
Sheriffs Office is investi
gating after damage caused
by gunfire was discovered
earlier this month to a wind
turbine at the Amazon Wind
Farm U.S. East located west
of Elizabeth City.
The damage to the wind
turbine at the wind farm op
erated at Avangrid Renew
ables was reported Dec. 6,
according to a sheriff depu
ty’s incident report.
Pasquotank Sheriffs Ma
jor Aaron Wallio said that at
around 1:14 p.m. on Dec. 6,
deputies responded to a re
port of property damage at
115 Foreman Bundy Road.
They were met by an Avan
grid Renewables site man
ager, who told them damage
to one of the turbines had
been discovered about two
hours earlier, Wallio said.
The turbine, identified
as turbine T06, had visible
damage at its lower end
that appeared to have been
caused by bird shot from a
shotgun, Wallio said. The
damage was external, as the
bird shot pellets stripped
the paint from where they
struck the surface of the
structure. Wallio said there
was evidence to suggest
that two separate shots
were fired at the turbine on
different unknown dates.
“Some of the exposed
steel was rusted from where
the shotgun pellets hit and
some of the steel still ap
peared to be fresh metal
indicating a more recent
event,” Wallio said.
Turbine T06 is located be
tween Haul and Kent roads
in western Pasquotank, ac
cording to Wallio. The last
time it was inspected before
the gunshot damage was
discovered was in early Oc
tober.
The turbine is valued at
about $1 million, according
to the incident report. It’s not
clear how much damage the
gunfire caused the turbine.
Avangrid Renewables has
operated the 208-megawatt
Amazon Wind Farm U.S.
East facility since 2017. The
wind farm is spread out over
22,000 acres in Pasquotank
and Perquimans counties
and includes more than 100
turbines.
The incident remains
under investigation. The
Pasquotank County Sher
iffs Office asks anyone with
information about the inci
dent to call 252-338-2191 or
Crime Line at 252-335-5555.

Perquimans, Camden stores fined for price scanner errors
Family Dollar in Hertford, Dollar
General in Camden fined
From staff reports
A Family Dollar store
in Perquimans County
and Dollar General store
in Camden are among 70
stores fined by state offi
cials in the third quarter of
this year because of exces
sive price-scanner errors.
The N.C. Department of
Agriculture and Consumer
Services’ Standards Divi
sion collected fines from
70 stores in 38 counties, in
cluding the Family Dollar at
206 Ocean Highway in Hert
ford and the Dollar General
in Camden at 139 U.S. High
way 158 West.
The Perquimans store
paid $5,000 in fines, accord
ing to a news release from
the department. An inspec
tion in September found an
error rate of 10.67 percent
based on 32 overcharges
in a 300-item lot. The store
also failed and paid fines for
four previous inspections.
Stores are required to have
an overcharge error rate of
no more than 2 percent on
300-item lots.
A reinspection in Novem
ber found an error rate of
18.67 percent based on 56
overcharges in a 300-item
lot. The store was assessed
a $5,000 fine and will be re-
inspected.
An employee at the store
told a reporter from the Dai
ly Advance Friday that she
was not authorized to speak
to the media
The Camden store paid
$3,345 in fines after an in
spection in July found an er
ror rate of 8 percent based
on 24 overcharges in a 300-
item lot. The store passed
inspection in September.
The Camden Dollar Gen
eral was the second in the
county to pay a fine because
of overcharges exceeding 2
percent. The Dollar General at
917 N.C. Highway 343 South,
Shiloh, paid a $5,000 fine late
last year after failing an in
spection in October 2021.
The inspections also
report “undercharges” —
when the store is ringing up
merchandise below the stat
ed price — but those aren’t
counted against the retailer,
the NCDA&CS said.
Penalties are assessed if
a store fails a follow-up in
spection. In addition to the
penalties paid, the store will
be subject to re-inspection
every 60 days from the last
inspection until it meets the
2-percent-or-less error rate.
Additional penalties may
be assessed if a store fails a
re-inspection.
Also among those stores
fined were two Family Dol
lar stores in Bertie County,
a Family Dollar in Hertford
County and two Dollar Gen
eral stores in Washington
County.
Consumers who would
like to file a complaint about
scanner errors they encoun
ter, can call the Standards
Division at 984-236-4750.
