Region
County corn growers to vote on assessment March 14
Growers’ assessment would
change to .30% of settlement
From staff reports
Area com growers will get
to decide later this month
whether to change their
assessment on com sold to
first purchasers.
The current assessment
is 1.25 cents per bushel,
and the Com Growers As
sociation of North Carolina
is proposing to change the
assessment to .30% of set
tlement. According to an as
sociation press release, the
change, if approved, would
bring CGANC’s assessment
in line with other row crop
assessments in North Caro
lina.
The CGANC will conduct
a referendum on the change
Tuesday, March 14. Voting
will take place at county
Cooperative Extension of
fices during regular busi ¬
ness hours. The votes will
be collected and tabulated
by NC State University and
the results published by
North Carolina Department
of Agriculture & Consumer
Services.
If the CGANC realizes an
increase in funds follow
ing the change, those funds
will be applied to creating
an endowed chair position
at NCSU for an Extension
cropping specialist-corn po
sition. The endowment will
ensure the position is filled
with the highest qualified
candidates in perpetuity, the
CGANC said.
Additionally, any increase
in revenue will cover the in
creased cost of conducting
research which benefits all
North Carolina com pro
ducers.
The Com Growers Asso
ciation of North Carolina is
governed by an all-volun
teer board of farmers and
industry representatives.

The Mobile Integrated
Health Program fills in gaps
in the health care system
by providing in-home visits
by a certified paramedic.
The program can improve
health outcomes for a vul
nerable population and also
reduce emergency room
visits, according to emer
gency services officials.
Emergency Services Di
rector Jonathan Nixon told
commissioners that the
grant will fund both equip
ment for the program as
well as personnel costs for
the two years of the grant.
Nixon told the county
commissioners that the goal
is for the program to become
self-sustaining by the end
of the grant period. If not,
then there will no longer be
funding support for the com
munity paramedic, but the
county will be able to keep
the equipment obtained
through the grant.
Support from ECU
Health Vidant Hospital was
instrumental in helping
Perquimans County get the
grant, according to Nixon.
The Duke Endowment
grant actually was award

hospital and county are
entering into an agreement
in which the hospital will
reimburse the county from
grant funds “for the pur
