Club holds first Senior Bingo Party since pandemic’s start From staff reports DURANTS NECK — Fresh off its first Senior Bingo Party since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Durants Neck Ruritan Club will host its annual fundraising auction next month. The club has already started collecting donations for the auction that will be held Saturday, April 22, at 2151 New Hope Road, Hert ford. Items sought include mowing equipment, tools, boats and vehicles. No yard sale type items are needed, the club said. The club’s Senior Bingo Party, held Feb. 16, tradi tionally is held two or three times a year and is free to senior citizens. This year, club members served more than 40 seniors a lunch of roast turkey, mashed pota toes and green beans. More than 20 games of bingo were played during the event and the winners were awarded prizes. The club has offered Se nior Bingo games for the past 20 years, only taking a short' hiatus during the pandemic. Part of the Durants Neck Ruritan Club’s mission is to provide a facility where se niors in the community can gather to have fun at no cost to them. “The club proudly be lieves seniors have so much to offer ... as they have the experience which is a much-needed asset in to day’s world,” the club said in a press release. Indian Summer Festival gives school foundation $500 From staff reports The committee that or ganized last fall’s Indian Summer Festival recently presented a $500 check to the Perquimans County Schools Foundation — pro ceeds from the festival’s car show. The car show was held Saturday, Sept. 10, as part of the festival in downtown Hertford that featured a car and bike show, games and food vendors and a crafts fair. The Indian Summer Festival, the first held in four years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, drew about 60 artisan craft and retail vendors and was sponsored by the Perqui mans County Tourism Au thority. Foundation Executive Director Brenda Lassiter said Stacey Layden, di rector of tourism in Per quimans County, recently contacted her about con tributing proceeds from the car show to the foun dation. “It’s exciting that the Indian Summer Festival Committee poured these funds directly back into the county to benefit our most precious resource — our children,” said Lassiter. The Friends group met recently to finalize plans for the event, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include a gift basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Perquimans Dog Festival The Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce will host its first Dog Festival at the Perquimans County Recreation Center Saturday, April 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival, which will feature various dog contests, each with prizes, is a fundraiser for the Chamber, AWARE, the Tri-County Animal Shelter, and the SPCA of Elizabeth City. The Perquimans Sheriff made the following recent arrests: • Blade Larabee, of the 1900 block of Main St. Extended, Elizabeth City, was arrested March 8 and charged with assault on a female. A $500 unsecured bond was set. • Steven Yoder, of the 130 block of Spindrift Lane, Hertford, was arrested March 8 and charged with shoplifting. A $500 unsecured bond was set. • Robert Hurdle, of the 500 block of Craney Island, Belvidere, was arrested March 9 and charged with writing a worthless check. • Scott White of the 1800 block of Harvey Point Road, Hertford, who was charged with selling or delivering Schedule VI of a controlled substance, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver Schedule VI of a controlled substance and maintaining a dwelling or vehicle for the sale or delivery of illegal drugs. His secured bond was set at $20,000. • Jatrel Coleman, of the 100 block of Wynn Fork Apartments, Hertford, who was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver Schedule II of a controlled substance. Obituaries Shirley Ann Ries HERTFORD - Shirley Ann Ries, age 86 of Hertford, NC, joined the Church Triumphant on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Chowan River Nurs ing and Rehabilitation Center, Edenton, NC. Bom in Akron, OH on November 25, 1936, to Mary Car nahan Myers and Russell Walter Myers, she was the wife of Kenneth Lee Ries. She spent 29 years as a Navy wife and was an original member of Chapel on the Sound at Holiday Island where she served as teacher, deacon and director of Christian Edu cation. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark An drew Ries. In addition to her husband of 61 years, she is survived by a daughter, MaryLou Heath (Mi chael) of Lakeland, FL, a son, Matthew Russell Ries (Amanda) of Courtland, VA, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Chapel on the Sound, 106 Soundview Road, Hertford, with Revs. Kevin Bettinger and Michael Heath officiating.
