Community first: New Chowan deputies have local ties
Gregory, Patterson, Bond,
Colon, enjoy public interaction
BY VERNON FUESTON
Chowan Herald
The Chowan County
Sheriffs Office has put four
new deputies on the job, all
of whom have local ties to
the community.
Chief Deputy John McAr
thur said the Chowan Sher
iffs Office has been trying
to hire local people to build
community trust.
“When somebody gets
out of that car and has to
do something like deliver a
death notification, or may
be just tell somebody they
need to drive more safely...
people want to know that
they are dealing with some
one they can talk to and
trust,” McArthur said.
All four of the new dep
uties have previous law en
forcement experience. Kay
la Gregory, who joined the
Sheriffs Office on April 1,
worked for five years with
the Virginia Beach Police
Department.
She grew up in Perqui
mans County and graduat
ed from Perquimans High
School, so she stayed in the
area when she took the job
in Virginia. Now that she has
a 15-month-old child, she
said reducing the commute
to work has become critical.
Danielle Colon is a U.S.
Coast Guard veteran with
seven years of experience
as a sheriffs deputy in Ber
tie County. She said the best
part of a deputy’s job is in
teracting with local citizens,
especially children.
“I love anything that in
volves children where I can
have a positive impact,” she
said, adding that the most
challenging part of the job
is dealing with people who
find themselves in trouble.
Gregory Bond is the new
school resource officer at
D.F. Walker Elementary
School. He comes to the job
after 13 years as a Bertie
County sheriffs deputy.
“I like interacting with
people any way I can,” he
said, adding the most chal
lenging part of the job is ar
resting people.

HERTFORD — Perqui
mans County officials are
looking for a way to ac
commodate a local event
venue’s desire to sell liquor
by the drink even though
current law doesn’t allow
liquor sales in the county
outside the Hertford town
limits.
Crawfish Shack owners
Marty and Sheryl Hurdle
told the Perquimans Coun
ty Board of Commission
ers last week that they
would like to be able to sell
liquor by the drink.
However, liquor-by-the-
drink licenses currently
are only available in the
town of Hertford, not in
unincorporated areas of
the county such as Swing
Gate Road, where the
Crawfish Shack is located.
Voters in Hertford ap
proved liquor-by-the-drink
in a referendum, which is
the process required under
statelaw.
Perquimans County At
torney Hackney High told
commissioners that North
Carolina’s alcoholic bever
age control laws have not
kept up with the growing
popularity of event venues
like the Crawfish Shack.
High noted that Hert
ford has an ABC Board and
ABC store but Perquimans
County does not. That’s be
cause the town of Hertford
held a successful referen
dum some years ago al
lowing liquor-by-the-drink
sales within the town lim
its. The referendum didn’t
include areas outside the
town.
