THURSDAYS H. C, MARTIN, KOITOR 1ND PioniiTOi (Cntered at the Postoffice at Lenoir, K. C, as second-class mail matter. Subscription price $1.00 a year, six months 50 cents, three months 25 cents. Tnis paper is sent only to subscribers wQo pay in advance. Advertising rates on application. Telephone No. 54. Thursday. May 6. 1915 Figures recently given out by Mr. E. C. Branson of the State University, in regard to the food products of North Carolina, are to say the least somewhat surprising. Not a single county in the State according to the figures compiled from the United States census reports, is self supporting. Alleghany comes nearest to raising all the county consumes, yet the figures show the people of that county spend for food and feed supplies, not raised in the county, $19,(XX). Caldwell is better otf than some of the counties as the people of Caldwell spend the sum of $996, 000 for food and feed raised out side the county, while over half the counties in tha state send over a million and some of them several millions, out for supplies of this kind. This is not a good healthy showing and indicates that the people of North Caroli na are giving too much attention to cutting lumber and raising cotton and tobacco and not enough to raising the articles needed for food for man and beast. The "Moonlight" School idea is growing fast in the State and the schools are doing a great work. They are simply neigh borhood schools wore grown people w ho have not had the ad vantages of an education, can go at night and to school and learn the rudiments of an education. There are many instances on record where men 40 or more years of age who had never even learned to read, have within a few weeks learned to read, write and do the simpler calcu lations in mathematics. If a person only learns to read, it is well worth the efforts, as by x reading the individual can ir sue his studies indefinitely and eventually become a well in formed person. Caldwell should have a number of these schools. Tile Laying. Mr, F. R. Baker, Drainage Engineer, will give three tile laying demonstrations this week, . .Thursday, the 6th, at Will C.
