The Davidsonian PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY BY THE PAVIDSONIAN PUBLISHING CO. Entered aa second-class mall matter Jane 8, 1010, at the post-office at Thoniasville, N C, under the Act of March 3, WTO. OUR TERMS Subscription one year lx months three months ..$ i oo GO MARTIN A JOHNSON. EDITORS. FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1913. WHY, INDEED? Tli is from the A'cn- York World: "Democratic principles liave not been hidden from the people. They have been pro claimed over and over ayiiin and the people have accepted them. The cane and beet sug nr states have accepted them The wool states have accepted them. Why then should men elected by those who endorse these oriiK'iples now have to be entreated not to vote witl the Republicans?" This is tolerably straight talk, and in our judgment precisely to the point. The Senators from Louisiana, for example, have acted with the Democrats at home and voted with the Republicans at Washington They were elected on a tariff reform platform, and stood for protection afterthey were elect ed. Louisiana is to all intents a Republican state, and she ought to ge over in the Repub lican column. There needs to be a bouse cleaning in the Democratic party sure enough. It is divid cd against itself. A small seg ment of the party is in sympa thy with the policy of protec tion. There are a few of thi class in Aortn Carolina. 1 hey ught to have the courage to go where thev beloiii., and that is to the Republican party. The next few months are go ing to be trying times for those gentlemen who have been sail ing tinder false colors. The issue is going to be made fairly and sunaielv. The men who are in control of our public af fairs are not related to Dr. Je kyll and Mr. Hyde. They have astonished the privileged class es by telling them that thev will abide by the platform upon which they were elected. Such a thing is unheard of in our hitter day politics. Kveu Mr. Simmons, who was slightly tainted with the doe trine that the South was enti tled to her part of the swag, is standing flat footed with the rest on the piatiorm aoopieu at Baltimore, and told a party of protection Democrats the other day that if he were disposed to help them lie could not do so as his committee would not stand for any change in the tariff bill. (ilorytothe courage of the men who are running the gov ernment! They are liable to upset the widely accepted no tion that all politicians are time servers. It looks as if we are going to have what has been eo long demanded- honest tariff teform. THE LAST LAP. Next Tuesday will settle the question, for the IK me being: at least, whether! lor not Davidson county is ready - to tuHe fer place along side her progress ive sisters on either side of her. Already the newspapers, which have no very exalted opinion of the intellitrence' of our people, are getting ready to announce the killing by l)a vidsouians of the best hill they have ever hadthe opportunity of voting for. It would be re freshing indeed if old Davidson would turn the laugh on them and crown herself with glory! We are told that the country people are opposed to the bill. We cannot believe that the ma jority of them Kre.' There are some who do understand the benefit it will bring, and who cannot he made to understand in time; there are others who know better, but for reasons of their own object to this step of progress. 1 Ins class ot people have always objected to every step oi progress in town or country. They are constitu tional objectors. There is still another class who hope to cur ry favor with the people for their owu personal promotion This latter class can never be relied on for any worthy cause, but are a constant menace and hindrance to everv forward stride either in the moral or civic realm. Hut we will not admit, until forced to do so, that the citizen- hip of this county prefer to settle in the mud when they have this easy and cheap meth- d of rising to solid ground. Our roads are a constant and ainful advertisement of our lack of that spiiit of progress that is becoming Statewide, and that is lifting old North Caroli na to. a higher plane. If I had known," is what many a man has said when it was too late. If any reader of this paper has the least mis giving about this matter he would better give good roads the benefit of the doubt. This bond issue will be no heavier nirdeii than we are already earing, but it will provide for the county beautiful highways hat will make Davidson one ol the hnest anil lest counties n all the State. W Responsibility We are born to responsibility; and try as we will we can not shirk it. Responsibility is simply a matter of keeping faith and the plea of ignorance never lessens it The plan on which the universe revolves is responsi bility not self responsibility, but the duty of one hu man being toward his brothers. Had men been left free by the plan of creation to think only of themselves, practically every one would drift along from day to day accomplishing nothing; building nothing. Men are builders because of the immediate benefits to their families and of the heritage of an honored name which glorifies the children of a doer. In so far as physical comforts are concerned, shelter and food and clothing The Building & Loan Assoc iation has come to be the medium by which men can fulfill responsibility to those dependent upon them.
