To quote their many fans “ain't nothing like the real thing, baby, even when it comes to hysteria, and the Jackson 5 are definitely the No. 1 group in America.” The fabulous quintet, Motown Record stars and idols of the teeny hoppers will appear at the Greensboro Coliseum Tuesday,August 7, for an 8:00 p.m. performance. The sensational teen age super group have sold over 25 million records; an incredible beginning of a fantastic career for five young men, children of Joe and Katherine Jackson, formerly of Gary, Indiana. One of their more recent single records, “Looking Through The Windows” offers even more solid evidence of their super- star status. The record hit the top ten spot on all national record survey charts in both the United States and Great Britain and has sold more than 1 '/2 miUion copies to date. Though one would hardly expect the five brothers to be identified with poUtics, it was a nationally prominent po litical figure. Mayor Richard Gordon Hatcher of Gary who brought the youngsters to the atten tion of Diana Ross, who was appearing in the midwestern city for a concert. Miss Ross went, saw, heard and was genuinely astounded. So much so that she called her long-time boss and friend. Berry Gordy, and in a matter ot weeks the Jackson 5 were not only under contract to Motown Records but were also appearing on such nation ally televised specials as “Diana” and “Going Back to Indiana”, their own special for ABC-TV. Scheer was presented with a Bulova Accutron Mark II watch by THE GREENSBORO DAILY NEWS-RECORD Executive Sports Editor, Smith Barrier, who also serves as a SPORTING NEWS correspondent. The pre sentation took place at the Coliseum's Cougar Den prior to the highlight pre miere screening of the Cougars’ film, “This Is Cougar Country.” The 36-year-old Scheer joins Cat Coach Larry Brown, who previously had been named the ABA Coach of the Year, and forward Billy Cunning ham, whose spectacular season had earned him Player of the Year honors. Carolina, under Sche- er's guidance, established itself as one of the ABA's premier franchises in route to the regular season Eastern Crown: 57 wins, the most in the league; a first-place spot from opening night thro ugh the final evening of the campaign; and an amazing 40 per cent one-season rise in overall attendance, a feat paralleled in professional basketball. Cougar owner, Tedd Munchak, obviously de- hghted with Scheer’s honor, finds him “extre mely sensitive to the needs of professional basketball and the most innovative and creative executive in the game today.” ABA Commissioner Ro bert Carlson, . when in formed of Scheer’s selec tion, offered, “we’re all quite proud of Carl on a league-wide basis. Caro lina’s successes in every phase speak for his tireless efforts.” Scheer joined the Cou gars in June, 1970, after serving a short tenure as President of the NBA's expansionist Buffalo Bra ves. Prior to joining Buffalo, the Springfield, Massachusetts native spent two years in the National Basketball As sociation’s New York headquarters as Admin istrative Assistant to Commissioner Walter Kennedy. His stint in New York was preceded di rectly by a lengthy law practice in Greensboro after receiving his law degree from Miami in 1960 and his AB from Middlebury College in 1958. While in Carolina, Scheer has been an avid proponent of the ABA- NBA merger and most active in internal league affairs. 1971 saw Scheer and the Cougars put on a record-setting ABA All- Star Classic before over 14,000 Tar Heel fans. As a member of the Rules Committee, he recently helped bring about the ABA's most recent change—the no-foul out rule which will be used during the pre-season on an experimental basis. THE SPORTING NEWS Award is the first of what is expected to be an annual poll of ABA executives to pick the league’s most outstanding performance. THIS IS Paper USE IT THAT'S OX.
