I I PAGE 6 THE TRIBUNAL AID WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1973 HIGH POINT NEWS EDITORIALS Continued from Page 4 Roy Wilkins on the appointment of AAr. Cotrell was blunt. His office was said to have observed: "You can't have this black regional director in New York because the building trades won't stand for it." Silberman, the under secretary, was said to be "furious" at this effort. He became so firm that the then Attorney General, John N. Mitchell, who had objected to the black director, was quoted as complaining: "Who does he think is running for President of the United States, Richard Nixon or Larry Silberman?" But though Silberman refused to back down and Cotrell's appointment was made, Peter Brennan, the "hard hat" man, removed him. Donald F. Rodgers, an assistant to AAr. Colson, is said to have been equally blunt about all-black unions. "He wanted the depart ment to bring enough action against them so they could put the unions out of business, because they were competing with white unions for construction jobs," was the way one source put it. AAr. Colson has said he didn't have close control over Rodgers. Rodgers is also alleged to have told some unions that the White House would relax its non-discrimination efforts after the election. Race and color, as in all of the U. S. history, appear to have been factors in the holy crusade to re-elect President Nixon in 1972. The language, according to reports, was nakedly racial and the action was abrupt and definite, in line with the traditions of the teamsters and construction work ers. The necessity for Negroes to fight this monolithic opposition is apparent. For black Americans the deadly contest is for bread, for shelter, for schools, for life's little successes and happiness. For all Americans the struggle against "the Water gate mind" will determine the kind of country we have. We can have cold and ruthless policies, sweep ing away the obstructive do- gooders, the Larry Silbermans, if you will, leaving only the hard machines to fight the hard machines — to the death. Short Thoughts accomplished. The Democratic Party must not turn its backs on the newcomers to the party. We must realize that each group has a value to give if it is more than seeing the needs of our country through its unique experience. I am sorry to say that the report of the Democratic Party clam bake in eastern North Carolina did not take account of the real situation today. AAost urban planning ironically leaves out the elements which are so essential to bringing the right spirit of community to an urban setting. Cherryview is a prime example of a lack of concern for the people who were supposed to be helped. It Is amazing that the project was finished at all. The people living in the community had very little input, if any, in the planning. The community has no church, recreation center, nor does it have people consistently working on a personal basis with residents who are working through new homeowners' responsibility and pitfalls. Pride in the community is one of the great needs for building a community spirit of good neigh bors. This means the people who build the housing and run the community should be from all walks of life there. A model community should include the full input of all tenants, clergymen, lawyers, professional people, businessmen, building crew work ers, volunteers, in a building program — all, both black and white, young and old. If the members of the community participate fully in decisions concerning the building of housing and growth of the community this will give each person a pride in sharing his community with others. The heart and souls of people must support the commun ity, not just their cleverness and aggressiveness. When life gets you down in the danger zone, seek the Security of high thoughts. "Lead me to the rock that is higher than 1," II: Again, consider the security of High Purpose. Chancellor Hutchins of the University of Chicago, has been greatly disturbed by the inabihty of many Educated people to face life, and solve their personal problems. He concludes that much University instruction is too encyclopedic, devoid of useful purpose. He says our great universities are like department stores of factual information; offering Students courses on every conceivable subject from Cow-Milking to Cosic rays. As a result, young people go out into the world with knowledge, but no purpose. They know how to order the things of their profession or business, but cannot order their own lives. They start out to right the world without putting in order, their own inner emotional and moral Ufe, The psalmist felt the need of a purpose mightier than any thing his own mind could concieve, and his own hands could possess. He wanted to put himself under the influence of something out-side of himself; that was greater than himself. Life, according to Jesus is not measured by what one possesses but by what possesses it. “For thou art a refuge for me. A tower of protection. I will dwell in thy tent for ever.” "For a sure hold upon lite he appeals to God.” Lead me to the rock. He wants the sense of security that is oaramount. He wants to fasten his faith about the impregnable rock of God’s protection. The Revised version, translation is suggested, “Lift me upon a rock and make me secure.” Other hopes had failed. Other foundations had crumbled. “But thy mercy 0 Lord, is from everlasting to ever-lasting, upon them that fear theee. Secure me in the fortress of thy power, that I may be able to stand against the forces that would destroy me, and having done all to stand. Secure me not in the shifting sands of some current philosophy or in the false security of Military might but “Lead me to the rock that is higher than L” “Make me secure in the things that are eternal.” The poor man of the Text had probably become lost in the claim of lower loyalties. He thinks about his troubles, and suddenly discovers a power outside him that could bring him through; and secure his soul in peace. “Lead me to that rock that is higher than I.” in. And last. The God-seeker is lured upward by the vision of the high. Every attainment becomes a vantage point, from which he gUmpses a higher - range of things-still desired. He is urged onward and upward by the vision of the rock that is higher. Whenever we have lost this, we have lost the God-ward Trail. “The writer of the Hebrews-puts it; These all died in the faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them and em-braced them.” Finally, when this psalmist found himself in the danger zone of life, he cried to God to lead him to the rock. I think that word is significant. He bases his petition on his faith in God. Don’t Waste Your Money With Unappreciative Merchants Special showing! Special savings!
