Any person who has

It has been demon
strated that diabetes is
more common and hence
found more readily in
certain population groups
which are often called
“high risk groups,” ac
cording to Dr. Isa Grant,
head of the Chronic
Disease Branch.
“Age seems to be one of
the foremost factors in
influencing the appear
ance of clinical diabetes,”
Dr. Grant explained.
“Studies have shown that
blood glucose levels rise
steadily with age. About
70 percent of all diabetics
are over 45 years of age
at the time of diagnosis;
only four percent are
children.
“Any individual with a
family history of diabetes
must be considered a
potential diabetic. Never
theless, it is advisable to
screen those who do no
know whether anyone in
the family has a history of
diabetes," Dr. Grant
cautioned.
"There is a correlation
between diabetes and
obesity, but a direct
relationship has not been
proven. It is not entirely
clear whether obesity is a

GREENSBORO. N. c. -
It seems like everytime
she turns around, Mrs.
Vallie Parker is making
the trip between her home
in Mt. Gilead, N. C. and
the A&T State University
campus.
Mrs. Parker was here
to pin the officer's bars on
her newly commissioned
son. Mack, and to enroll
her son Tony for A&T’s
fall term.
But Mrs. Parker has
been here countless times
before, what with having
seen nine of her sons and
a daughter graduate from
A&T.
“There’s no doubt that
the Parkers hold the
record for brothers and
sisters attending the
university,” said William
Gamble, director of ad
missions. “Everytime we
cause of diabetes or an
affect of the disease,” she
said.
The excess of females
among known diabetics,
together with the difficul
ties that are encountered
in pregnancy among
diabetic women, has also
suggested a relationship
between child bearing
and diabetes.
Who develops dia
betes? Dr. Grant suggests
diabetes is most likely to
be found among those
who are over 40 years of
age, obese, blood rela
tives of diabetics, mothers
who have given birth to
babies that weigh nine
pounds or more at birth,
and women who have
shown carbohydrate in
tolerance during preg
nancy.
