Dear Miss Hill: Will you please give me a brief character reading and a suitable career for Scorpio ---my star sign? I was born October 28, 1948. Billie, Rochester, N.Y. Scorpio subjects are strong- willed and reserved, with deep feelings. You have dignity and pride, and resent criticism. You're secretive, rarely revealing the whole of your nature. Ideal careers are welfare work, teaching, the police force, medicine, salesman ship or any work in travel, change or variety. Consumer's Corner by Barry L. Boneno Executive Director High Pbmt ConsuiriRi- Credit Counseling WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1973 31, “■ nsccWMi mM When buying products that are guaranteed, there are a few facts you should know. First, be sure that every promise a salesman makes is in writing. A guarantee is frequently only as good as the store or dealer backing it. Taking a dispute over a guarantee to court is complicated, and may cost more than the product in question. Trade only w'ith stores and dealers who have reputations for standing behind their guarantees. So called "lifetime” or "uncondi tional” guarantees are just so much fan-fare. A valid guarantee states the exact amount of time that the guarantee will be in effect. Also, a reliable guaran tee names specifically w'hat parts, repairs and services are covered. The guarantee should explain exactly what has to go wrong before the guarantee is effective. It should state clearly wheth er only parts, only labor or both are covered. Additionally, some gua rantees require the owner of the product to send it to the factory at his own expense for repairs. Others require that the product be repaired by an "authoriz ed" service dealer. An authorized service dealer is one that the manufacturer of the product has designated to repair its merchandise. Remember, such a guarantee is of little value if there is no authorized service dealer in your area. Finally, some guarantees .will only pay a portion of the repair cost; for instance, you pay half, and they pay half. Be sure that the guarantee clearly de fines what the manufactur- .er will pay. I’ve arranged to have a for eign student stay at my house this fall. Can I deduct the amounts I spend to maintain him in my home? A. You may deduct as a chari table contribution amounts you pay up to $50 per month to maintain in your home a full time student at a U.S. school. He cannot be in any grade higher than the 12th. The student must be someone other than your de pendent or relative. He can be a foreign or American student, but he must be a member of your household under a written agreement between you and a charitable organization to which contributions are deductible. Fi nally, the purpose of the agree- "lent must be to provide edu cational opportunities for the student. I opened up an account with a stock broker last March. He buys and .sells slocks for me, but I never withdraw any profits from the account. Do I still have to pay taxes on the profits on my 1973 tax reUirn? A. Yes. The fact that you do not withdraw profits from your brokerage account does not post pone taxation of those profits. They are fully taxable in the year earned, even if the credit balance in your account may be reduced or eliminated by losses in later years, or your current profits are used to reduce later losses. Q. I drove 25 miles from my home to an IRS office for an audit, district conference and ap pellate conference. Can I deduct the cost of traveling to and from the IRS to challenge the result of an IRS audit? A. Yes. Expenses paid or in, curred by a taxpayer in connec tion with a proceeding involved in determining the extent of tax liability or in contesting his tax liability are deductible. Q. Can the beneficiaries of an estate ever be required to pay Federal estate lax for the estate? A. The beneficiaries of an estate may be called upon to pay the estate tax only if the estate does not pay it when due. Even if this is the case, the liability of the beneficiaries is limited to the ex tent of the value, at the time of the decedent’s death, of the prop erty acquired by them. For more information, see IRS Publication 448, “A Guide to Federal Es tate and Gift Taxation.” It's avail able for fifty cents at your local IRS office or at your Government Printing Office bookstore.
