ICougar Shortsl Irvin Continues As Leader f I j.: ] 7 The Cougars’ annual "Basketball Night” unfolds in Greensboro and Char lotte as a pre-Christmas treat, December 14th-15th. The first 500 youngsters. 14 and under accompanied by a paying adult, will receive a coupon good for a regulation-size red, white, and blue basketball re deemable in Greensboro at McNeil Farm Center on West Wendover Avenue and in Charlotte at specified locations of Branch Banking and Trust Company. December 14th will also serve as “Bates Nitewear Night” in Greensboro with over 1,500 Bates employees and their families in attendance. Charlotte area Postal employees and their families will be guests of the Cougars at the December 15th New York tilt. Cougar television returns Wednesday, December 12, as the Cougars face the streaking New York Nets at Uniondale, New York’s Nassau Coliseum. Air time for the telecast is 7:30 p.m. with Dick Stockton and Mike Lewis providing all the commentary. WCCBTV (18) in Charlotte, WXII-TV (12) in Winston-Salem, and WRDU-TV (28) in Raleigh- Durhani form the Cougars’ three network stations. Mack Calvin continues to be a machine at the free throw line. The 26-year old California native has a current string of 42 in a row intact. His last miss was in Greensboro against New York on November 16th. He is currently hitting 90 percent on 148 of 165. His previous career best was 87 percent in 1070-71 with the Floridians. The 6-0 Calvin had an earlier streak of 34 this season. ‘‘1 intend to break the record this time,” winks Mack. The record he mentions could be either his own Cougar record of 44 set last year or Kentucky’s Lou Dampier’s pro record of 57 set during the 1970-71 campaign. COUGAR NOTES: Carolina attendance for 14 home dates is 82,985 or 5,928 per game ... for the same number of home games last season, the Cats had drawn 97,752 or 6,982 per contest... the Cougs’ road mark of 10-5 is the ABA’s best (Kentucky, 4-3, the only other team over .500) ... Carolina also posted the best record on enemy courts last season (27-15) ... the Cougars have 22 technical fouls (Larry Brown 9, Jim Chones 7) to opponents’ 17. Continued from Page 7 Irvin grew up in Orange, and he remarks of his childhood. ”We went to an integrated school and you had to be twice as good academically and athleti cally or you could not make it.” As a graduate of the University of Illinois and a masters degree recipient from Columbia University, Coach Irvin now serves on 18 important committees, while fulfilling his duties as the athletic director and as an associate professor of Physical Education. ”You must keep a book, not a file, on all of the activities that the athletic director’s position call for because the responsibilities are so numerous. Coach Irvin has won awards from the "First Negro to win the American Legion Award” to the more coveted awards as the coach of the year in 1952 and 1962 in the CIAA.
