That's the 1974 ABA All-Star Classic set for Norfolk's elegant Scope on January 30th at 8 P.M. Third-year guard Mc Clain has been the league's steals leader since early in the campaign. This despite not achieving starting status until December 14th. It was just twelve days later that "Hound" swiped an ABA record 12 from New York in Raleigh. His field goal percentage has hover ed around the .500 mark and of late, he’s set personal highs in rebounds (13) and assists (9). The All-Star reserve berth caps quite a month for the former Tennessee State All-American -- wife Mar garet gave birth to Terra Lynn in Greensboro on December 31st. For Mack Calvin, it’s not the first ‘‘classic’’ appea rance. Make it number four in a row and second consecutive start. The 6-0 speedster missed All-Star status in only his rookie season with Los Angeles. 1973-74 has been a not-so-typical Calvin year. Sure, lie's averaging 16.5 points (in 29 minutes per game) and he's handing out four assists and grabbing three rebounds per contest. And, he's among the leaders in free throw percentage, hovering just below the 90"'o mark most of the season. He's had consecutive free throw streaks of 42, 32, 28, 22, and 21 thus far. But have you checked the ABA's top ten in steals recently? There’s little Mack, his total of 87 through January 13th is only six behind his entire total of last season. Somehow, Mack Calvin just keeps getting better and better One conspicuous name is absent from the East team, especially when one sur veys his entire contribu tions. Caldwell, who missed the fourth forward spot by two points, has enjoyed a superb season -- 13,9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 49% field goal shooting, 22 blockcd shots, and 99 steals (fifth in the ABA). That's not even mentioning his defensive abilities which are without a peer in the ABA. Certainly, a change in voting mechanics is in order for statistic sheets fail to tell a complete story when All-Star voting time arrives.
