J Sickle Ceil Report Continued from Page 1 was dissimilated through out Africa. This abnormal gene was first detected in the United States in the early 1900s by a doctor in the midwest w ho was treating a chronically . ill West Indian student. Since that time, it has been staled, and usually accept- . ed, that one Black American in ten (1 in 10) is born with sickle ecu' trail (the carrier state for Sickle Cell Anemia) and that one Black American in five, hundred (1 in 500) is born with the disease (Sickle Cell Anemia). Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited disease and cannot be contacted or caught by personal contacts or associations. You arc born with the trait or the disease or you will never have either. Sickle Cell Trait (the carrier state for the disease) will never develop into Sickle Cell Anemia, and Sickle Cell Trait is NOT a mild form of the disease, Rumph stated. , There is no cure for Sickle Cell Anemia and our screening process is not geared so much to detecting Sickle Cell Ane mia as it is to identifying those individuals v.'ith Sickle Cell Trait. Persons found to be carriers for Sickle Cell Anemia are given a short intense course on Sickle Cell Anemia in the form of genetic counseling, as to their chances of producing off springs with the disease. The decision to have or not have children is theirs to make, Mr. Rumph said. The testing if free and anyone may take the test. All reports are handled confidentially and only the persons tested may receive test results; guardians - in case of a minor. Educational material is available on request and clubs, groups and organiza tions can call the Sickle Cell office and arrange for a member of our staff to come and show our film ■strip on Sickle Cell. There FIREWOOD !! SAVE FUEL SAVE MONEY CUT YOUR OWN. is no charge and speakers arc also available to talk with anyone about Sickle Ceil Disease. Our numbers are: 724-2831, Ext. 212 or 236; or 722-0997. Rumph stated that many Black people feel victimiz ed, uncomfortable and have a tendency to be withdrawn w hen Sickle Cell Disease is mentioned in an integrated setting; however, they shouldn't be. There are many hereditary diseases and many of them affect one race or group of people more than another. Sickle Cell Anemia just happens to be a disease which affects mostly Black People in the United States. However, it is also found in people in the United States « ho are classifietl as white. There are many people in the United Slaics whose ancestors canic from the Mediterranean Sea area, such as Italians, Greeks, Turks, ctc. Black people rarely have cystic fibrosis. Tay-Sach's Di sease affects mostly ,Ic\\ ish people and heniapliilia affects mostly white peo ple, just to name a few . Because of this and similar reactions among Black people and some even more unrealistic assumptions on the part of many whites in the United States relative to Sickle Cell Disease, demonstrates the Importance of mass educa tion by all Sickle Cell Screening programs.
