Eugenics Commission, Social Service Boards, Mental Institutions Heads and Commissioners with out the written consent and knowledge of the patient or individual; with the recommendatios of the family doctor and further recommendations from two other doctors. In the case of minors the written consent must come from the parents or guardians. The patient or individual can appeal the decision of the Eugenics Commission to the U.S. Disirict Courts. Out of this number over 5,000 have been Blacks. (Blacks represent less than 25 per cent of the total population in North Carolina.) From 1960 to 1968 there were 1,620 operations for sterilization: L023 Blacks; 549 White; 48 Indians. Fifty-nine per cent of these were under age 20 and 28 of these were males. These parents and individuals were denied their constitutional rights under the 14th and 15th Amendments, Rep. Johnson said. TWO SUITS ' have been filed in the U.S. Eastern District Court by the American Civil Liberities Union on behalf of two Blacks: Mrs. Elaine Riddick Trent of Edenton and Miss Ruth Cox of Plymouth, both now residing in New York. These operations were allegedly performed without their knowledge or consent. Miss Cox was operated on in 1965 at the age of 14 and Mrs. Elaine Trent was operated on in 1968; she is now 19. Miss Cox and Mrs. Trent are suing the state Social Service Boards of the respective counties, Eugenics Commission and operating doctors for 1. million dollars each. SMALL Senior Citizens Club To Organize At Goldston Park The High Point Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a new senior citizens club. This club will be known as the Goldston Park Senior Citizens. The first meeting will be held on February 20 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Goldston Park, which is located on the corner of South Elm and Cassell streets. Anyone 55 years of age or older is welcome to join. This will be an active club with trips, luncheons, crafts, bingo, and anything else to keep members young at heart.
