By Morrie Turner| Report Made By A&T Task force
GREENSBORO - A task
force of the 15,000-member
A&T State University
National Alumni Associa
tion has stated that the
group believes that the
state is sincerely looking for
“just solutions to the
problem of desegregating
higher education.”
“We are pleased with
the relationship we have
had with Dr. William
Friday (president of the
University of North Caro
lina),” said Mrs. Velma S.
Jones, who coordinates the
task force. “We are
concerned now about the
state getting the specifics
to meet the June dead
line.”
Mrs. Jones made her
report during the associa
tion’s annual meeting at
the Golden Eagle Motor
Inn.
She said the A&T alumni
group is the outgrowth of
the Alumni and Friends
Coalition, an organization
of the alumni associations
of the five predominately
black colleges in the state.
The group has been
meeting with both state
officials and with Peter
Holmes, director of the
Office of Civil Rights for the
Department of Health,
Education, and Welfare.
“This is a very positive
thing we have undertak
en,” said Eugene Preston,
president of the A&T
Alumni Association. “We
sincerely want to assist in
establishing and imple
menting a plan which will
insure significant involve
ment in the development
and implementation of
North Carolina’s plan.”
At the association’s
annual awards dinner in the
Memorial Union Saturday
night, the group was
addressed by Randolph T.
Blackwell, executive direc
tor of the Southern Rural
Action, Inc.
Blackwell’s organization
in Atlanta has been cited by
two U.S. Presidents for its
efforts in creating a better
life for the rural poor in the
deep South.
Since 1966, the organiza
tion has helped to create 19
black-owned businesses
and jobs for 2,000 minority
persons.
Following Blackwell’s
address, the association’s
highest awards were pre
sented to Mrs. Jones, a
resident of Columbia, Md.,
and a specialist in guidance
for the Maryland State
Department of Education,
and Mrs. Elizabeth Kim-
ber, a health planning
official for the Federation of
Community Planning in
Cleveland, Ohio.
Winners of the individual
school award were Hugh D,
Bullock, Cleveland, Ohio;
John F. Jerrett, Indianapo
lis, Ind.; Roy McCullough,
Columbia, S.C.; Prince
Legree, Indianapolis; Ed
ward Phillips, Indianapolis.
The military award was
won by Col. Charles
Murphy of Indianapolis and
the athletic award went to
Harvey Keaton, also of
Indianapolis.
Ronald Ross of Colum
bia, S. C. won the
“Outstanding Young A-
lumnus Award, and special
citations were presented to
Ms. Sandra Harris, Atlan
ta; John Jones, Wilson; and
